Art Mitchell displays his comemerative medal he received in Normandy for his return to the beaches after fifty years. by Saphronia Katchia Friday, June 17, 1994, Art Mitchell was honored with a welcome home dinner at the Agency Longhouse for the return from Normandy, which he felt, "was a long trip." Mitchell said the return to Normandy was emotionally difficult for him but it helped in a way. He wanted to see what the place looked like after being bombed 50 years ago. Those who traveled with Art were his daughter Gloria Mitchell, his grandson Jose Calica and his niece Cassic Katchia. They traveled to the Omaha and Utah beach heads. Mitchell said the beaches were left lorn up just as they were when they left fifty years ago, although some rebuilding had started on some of the battleground areas. Bullet holes were painted over. They toured Paris for a day, which Art said he enjoyed. He got to see the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower. But, "never did learn any French." . President Clinton was there with the French President on June 6. It pretty much rained all day of the 6th v and the wind blew so Art did not dress in regalia for the 50-ycar anniversary day. 1 Ic did dress June 7 and was photographed by the Japanese. Art was among only a few who received the commemoration medal which the French government presented to those veterans who returned to the beaches. 1 Flags of those countries who took part in the battle of Normandy are displayed in front of local battle museum. 1 ; tit t h ; v.
