PAGE 4 June 10, 1994 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo Editorial E Coosh EEWA: The way it is Letters to the Editor ,,V',i Spilyay Speaks Yep! This June 6, 1994, marks the 50th anniversary of the Great Normandy Landing, on June 6, 1944, that put a cap on the World War II, so to speak. A half a Century ago men invaded the shores at Normandy as men came by land, sea and air. Many, many young boys at that time gave up their lives and never knew what life was all about as they fell in battle. Now 50 years later many Veterans have returned to the site to pay tribute to all their buddies who died in battle and never came home. It was a hard situation for many to speak for their friends who died during that time of the war. a time that turned the tables of the war and made a faster ending of that horrible war. As the big event got under way men storming he beaches there were Paratroopers who were being dropped behind the lines to cut off the Germans and supplies which played an important part of the whole operation. There were many Paratroopers who never came back alive, and some were killed before they hit the ground. How horrible it must have been for all those young men to give up their lives for the rest of the world to go free. I can only imagine how it must have been in those dark dreary days of the World War II. Today all the young folks only read in history books of the World War II, and never give it any thought of what everyone went through during those days. Yep! there are many small fellers who can remem ber being the only ones around with all the old fellers. Remembering a hit tune at that time when all the Women were singing, "They're either too young or too old." All the Women working in War Plants in the big cities wearing the pants while the guys are away. Spring time around here didn't give us that opportunity to greet the April showers, as a matter of fact we didn't have any April showers at all. Now things are looking pretty bad as for as greenery is concerned. We sure could have used a lot of April showers as a lot of the hills are already turning yellow with the dry grass. Soon there will be some wild fires all around the place. Another big factor for a dry season and a low water content was because of the lack of snow this year. During the winter months there were no snow falls to speak of at all. What did fall melted away as soon as it hit the ground and they didn't last very long either and never dampened the ground at all. Yep! this dry season is being felt by all the farmers and those who depend on the water supply. Could be hard on the Marijuana plants, (Ayeee)! Oh Well, it could be hard on any kind of vegetation as far as that goes. AAHH-NAH-CHI- TOON. Toe Ness There was this Not-So-Bright guy who went into a Casino. He said he won every time he played it, the only thing was it only Paid Off with Postage Stamps. YIKES SS SS SS Warm Springs Elder Walk a BIG success; Thanks! On memorial Day, it is a sacred day for the Indian people across the country, as many communi ties focus more on the war dead, the Indian race respects all who have passed on in their families. Every family member is honored on Memorial day from infant to the very old and are not forgotten. However, special pride is paid to those who have fallen in battle during war time. Also since the end of the wars we have had many veterans who have passed on and we take pride in those men who were willing to put their lives on the line in time of war. The Ameri can flag flies on man v craves here in Warm Springs, OR, for those who served their country during times of disrupt around the World Decoration Day, as it was referred to in the olden day's, where everyone goes out and cleans, and prepare the graves for decorations. Yep! The Indian people take grate pride of all who have passed on. Visiting the Cemeteries and remembering all those days in the past once a year. Many visit cemeteries quite frequently when things are not going well. This sort of puts minds at ease. To the editor, The Warm Springs Senior's Program staff wish to express the biggest of the "BIG NOTE OF APPRECIATION AND THANK YOU!" to each of the senior citizens and everyone else who participated in, and assisted with the Warm Springs Elder Walk on May 25th. Some local programs and departments who really came through with flying colors on this excellent weather day to help with the elder's walk included the Warm Springs Fire Safety Department, the Tribal Police Department, ECE staff & all of their young students, the Recreation Department, Spilyay Tymoo, our CHR's,IHS personnel, Social Service staff, Community Counseling representatives, the Community Health Education Team, KWSO Radio Station, and many representatives from the community and other programs. When Joey Ortiz jumped out to lead the warm up calisthenics, and everyone was making all of that loud noise, curious bluebirds, magpies & meadowlarks came to investigate what was going on. Those inquisitive onlookers became a little nervous & concerned when our elders and the ECE kids started stomping the ground, and began to cause those Richter scale measured 3.3 earth tremors. More birds came to check out this happening, and they too, were becoming distressed. Wilson Wewa, Jr., of our staff, told them there was no cause for alarm and that they were witness to a special local activity in observance of the "1994 National Senior Health & Fitness Day." Also, that we are looking to make this the first annual seniors community event for everyone to join in, and walk & smile a mile. Those birds all sang out with joy when they realized that this was an event to promote good health. and that there was no major threat to destruction of our planet. Mr. Wewa had originated this fitness activity idea for our Senior program. At the onset of the walk, as the walkers left the Seniors Center to stroll down the long, winding, hillside trail in almost military precision to the walkway along Hollywood Blvd., the crickets & grasshoppers all stopped gossiping, fell silent, and watched in awe. Astonished dogs & cats at the homes along the route gladly welcomed the invasion of their privacy. The dogs wagged their tails to greet everyone, and the cats joined them as they waved & cheered when they saw George Schneitcr, Buck Jones, Ursula Little, Fannie & Faye Waheneka, Iris Smith, Prunie Williams (in her warm ups), Elizabeth Rhoan, Margaret & Dan Buckland, Edna Sanders and Thclma Coburn leading the fun walk for all of our other seniors and the long line of kids and young adults who had come to show their support. Motorist and their passengers looked amazed to see the very large number of people (possibly 250 to 300) who had come to do the walk. This milestone occasion concluded with a pleasant picnic at Jurassic Park, the newly developed, still to be completed, park across the street from the community center, the food was prepared by our Senior Program cooks. One other acknowledgement: one of our elders who had been assisting with a family crisis when the walk was taking place, came in to the Senior's Center late in the afternoon and volunteered to walk the prescribed course. After completing the walk, she came back to report that it was easy mush! This elder was Caroline Tohct. In all, we wish to thank the many people who supported this special activity.
