SpilyayTymoo Warm Springs, Oregon May 13, 1994 PAGES Appreciation i : On behalf of the Department of : Natural Resource, we would like to extend our sincere appreciation for ; all the people who participated in Spring Clean-up around the community. A number of activities and events such as parades, poster essay contests, opportunity for locals to bring Hazardous Household Waste for safe disposal, Residential clean up etc. We worked with a number of different departments to provide free trash bags to encourage the spring clean-up itself, large item pickup, and of course prizes to encourage participation. We especially want to recognize the Warm Springs Elementary Students for participating in our poster and essay contests. In reviewing all the posters and reading the essays, Warm Springs Elementary Students have a surprising perception of what the future looks like. We all need to keep in mind taking care of our natural resources, our land, is very important not only for today but for all future generations. These activities are designed to provide opportunities forchildren and adults to not only learn about local environmental issues but help clean up some of the problems we have created for ourselves. Environmental Month is a new annual event geared toward educating the young and encouraging participation by all. Hopefully the results will encourage care taking of the reservation lands for the future. Following are the results of the PosterEssay Contests. Themes were based on LandAirWaterWaste Recyclingwith tying a cultural aspect into it. Happy birthday, seniors! This all got started back in October 16, 1992 when Louis got air lifted to St. Charles hospital because he was gavely sick. So I called the tribal court and tried to get a postponement, but the clerk said they had to have 24 hour to 72 hour notice even if I explained Louis' situation for his life or death excuse he had to have immediate surgery....revived twice. I tried to explain there was no way I could have known that Louis was going to be sick. So they went ahead with court. Later on Louis received a call from his brother gloating he won guardianship because no one showed up to contest his request. We also found out later that other family members were not notified of such proceedings. f .... .. r . . . v . . .." . . , ! 1 "" "'. noted to those Winners: 1st grade-Rm. 1 Ms. Rodgcrs; 1st prize-Jordon Caldcra, 2nd prize Myron Northrup, 3rd prize-Heather Johnson 3rd grade-Rm. 16 Ms. Ohman; 1st prize-Young Leo Helton, 2nd prize-Deidra Johnson, 3rd prize-Gary Villa 3rd grade-Rm. 10 Ms. Hcnslcy; 1st prize-Ralf Aguilar, 2nd prize Amy Bobb, 3rd prize-Erica Parr 3rd grade-Rm. 19 Mr. Nelson; 1st prize-Preston Smith, 2nd prize Monica Cuevas, 3rd prize-Robert Heath, Jr. 3rd grade-Rm. 10 Ms. Hcnsley; 1st prize-Victoria Smith, 2nd prize Valerie Suppah, 3rd prize-Shanon Wilson 3rd grade-Rm. 18 Ms. White; 1st prize-Nathan Napyer, 2nd prize-Clay Starr, 3rd prize-Mariana Manion Head Start three If you have a child who will be 3 years old on or before September 1, 1994 heshe is eligible for the Warm Springs Head Start 3 year old program. Warm Springs Composite Products would like to thank the other four (4) people who bid on this new position. They were all outstanding people and our choice was not any easy one. distresses family members Since it just has been snow balling on several occasions different people would come see Louis & me asking who's suppose to be caring for Pus-A-Lee and when we let them know we did not; several people were concerned & worried because they hadn't seen here & wondered of her whereabouts. Prior to Pus-A-Lee being taken from our home, we had her for ten years and we did our best and managed. Within those ten years, her other son never came around to check on his mother, if anything we had to take mom to see him when he was living in Coos Bay. When it came time to go to court and we had all our witnesses ready for testimony's the judge only heard two and decided he was too young and inexperienced in this case, so he decided to postpone and get a more qualified judge. What I couldn't understand was all of the family members except one was in agreement with Pus-A-Lee back in our home and she was been seen by other family members & friends and attending traditional functions. When we came to court again everyone was ready for court and hoped it would be all over with, little did we know it would be one-sided. Even though we had witnesses, they were not heard again and we were told it was suppose to be a new beginning. That our court system was tired of seeing us in court and we were suppose to come to some agreement, which we did, we were ready to go to court. Then we were told that the other brother was making demands and as usual he got his way and got what is called co-guardianship of Pus-A-Lee. There was nothing done of what the judge so called alleged cases of abuse and at the beginning of the court he kept on telling the family that this was suppose to be an example case of an elder. Then he turns the table around and gives Pus-A-Lee back to the other son, after he had her removed from such abuse. Whatkind of example is this suppose to be? To us this is confusing and the system seems contradicting. What was the whole reason for going to court was to see to our Elder's health and welfare and safety. When we had her we always had someone with her. She was not left alone. What's going to happen to alot of you when you reach your senior years is someone going to take care of you? Are you going to get abused? There are all kinds of abuse, let's pray your children remember what you taught them, to honor A respect your elders. Parents are also invited to stop by and talk with Judy about any concerns they may have. With the help of IHS, ECE hopes this access to health service will contribute to the community becoming a healthier more knowledgeable place, Court procedures con fuse daughter nr At i'a. ........ -..a . To the editor, I'm confused with the court, procedures and language. (l)October 16, 1992: there was a hearing on Hazel Q. Tewee (elder-Yakama enrollee) which at that time by choice H.Q. Tewee lived with Louis Frank Tewee for 10 years. Family majority voted & agreed that Louis Frank Tewee would watch our mother, since she chose him. Willard at time was out of reservation, concerned only of his own life. Louis used a Power of Attorney and not through the Court like Willard had chosen. Oct. 16, 1992, Louis was air-lifted to Bend Hospital. Called the Court by his wife (LaLovi Jackson) of the situation. ..Court would not excuse his life or death excuse and that he was air lifted to Bend for immediate surgery ...revived twice. Willard called later not of concern for his older brother but..of conquest of court granting him with our mother's guardianship. Pardon our ignorance to Court procedures...but, the whole family was not made aware of Guardianship hearing that went on October 16, 1992. Is this the proper procedure? I don't think so...we the majority of H.Q Tewee's family would like it to remain as was prior to Willard Tewee's arrival in 199111 He brought with him family confusion, disruption, personal damage & death. We, the family of H. Q. Tewee (elder) came out the hearing May 3, 1994, very confused, unhappy, $50 REWARD Have you seen Gizmo? Gizmo is a light brown tea cup Chihuahua. It will be held on Wednesday May 18th from 6-8 p.m. in ECE Building "C". As always child care and a light meal will be provided. In the past parenting focused on helping children prepare for adulthood, but the world that they faced was m uch different than todays. Then the child needed to be part of the group and learn the ways of the hunter, warrior, gatherer, caretaker and decision maker. The environment required that they learn the lessons well or they and the group would not survive. Today the adult roles differ to some extent and the dangers and challenges of the world are definitely different. Parents will be asked to examine again where they have learned to parent, the circumstances in which they now parent, the special problems faced by Indian children in today's world and the cultural issues parents face in parenting. Further, they are asked to determine what kind of parent they want to be. It is time to look realistically at the job of parenting, the limits and frustrations and then to set some goals for themselves. By developing a realistic pictureof where they have come from, what they face and where they want to be, parents can be better equipped to use positive Indian parenting skills. for H.Q. Tewee. Am I strong enough to work with Willard & wife? I feel like I'm being pitted against them for her safety...I filed with the police department for her safety. I'm confused & left wondering how it will work out. Judge didn't go over the reports filed with the police department, investigating officer & prosecutor. The whole purpose was to protect our mother from neglect & abuse and now the judge has handed her right back to them due to my ignorance to court procedures & language. I've written a letter of concern to G.M. of Public Safety in regards to Investigations & Prosecutor office, never did receive an answer from all of them, went as far as the C.O.O. and still no answer, and we will not stop here for the love of our mom, Hazel Queahpama Tewee.
