Well we've had quite a mild winter, hardly any snow to mention, so I won't mention any. What did come caused enough moisture to slow things down a little in the wooda. YEP! It's bad forthe seasonal work force especially in the woods where there is really not enough moisture for a good summer, but yet enough to slow the logging operations. Seems like the logging seasons are becom ing more and more serious with most of the larger timber cut out. Maybe it's about time to try to find other means of income forthe Tribes .since the jobs are becoming more scarce. There must be some sort of industry that's worth looking into. Some folks could even venture into their own business like selling beaded ear rings and other small Trinkets along the highway 26. AYEEee! Since the logging and fishing industries are in a bad situation, there must be other means of profit making sources out in the cruel world. One for sure is the "Gaming," area where many Tribes are heading toward. There is talk of a six digit intake that does look very attractive from a certain standpoint. However, there are some reservations who have "Bingo," that claims a huge take all the time, but who actually ends up with all that "Cash?" Gaming might be one solution for an Income for some tribes but I've yet to see where anyone is really profiting from this kind if an investment. Most what I've read are the problems people are running into trying to get their gaming establishments underway .There are all kinds of problems and red tape to go through especially if the Native Americans stand to make a buck or two. The states, cities, towns people are all against the Indian Casinos across the country. Yet the states have all kinds of gambling going on all the time, like, like Video Polker, Pull Tabs, the Lottery and Track Betting and all sorts of gaming items. But as soon as the Indians want to start a casino everyone jumps down on them. Guess, they would rather see the Indians with out anything, in poverty like we are today. It's hard for the White Eyes to see any Indian prosper. Instead of trying to help the Indians they try everyway to destroy him. We have a unique situation here where there is no White Man owned land. Uur reservation would be just tne place lor a casino, out a joint like this, in my opinion is bad money. Gambling is bad business for some people. Some people would rather let their family suffer just so as that person could go and gamble his last bucks away. Thats true, No one ever comes out of a gambling joint a winner. From time to time you might hit a small jackpot on a machine, but thats just to keep you interested, but eventually you're a "LooserThere are some people who get addicted to gambling. When that happens, "Watch out Charlie. ' You're bound to lose your shirt. YEP! Lose everything. Even If It Rains. AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON!! ! To the Editor, Well, it's been a great three months as my reign continues as Miss Warm Springs A your representative, I will be informing the community of my activities and the events that I have attended. The first three months have been exciting as I try to balance out my representation of the Tribe with my college classes, my part-time job and my volunteer activities at the police department as a reserve. But, with out any of these activities, I would not know what to do. The places and functions that I have attended was the Simnasho School re-opening, which brought back a lot of good memories, be cause I spent my first three years of grade school in Simnasho. I also was present at a couple of the grand en tries of the Lincoln's Powwow, but not all because I was ill. After Lincoln's, on a last minute invitation, I attended the Morning Star Celebration Powwow and Art Festival in Phoenix, Arizona. On March 18, 1 returned after an exhausting week of college finals, and spent the day honoring our el ders on Honor Seniors Day. The fol lowing Monday, I left for Portland for a week and participated in the National Women in Health Confer ence V. During that conference, I attended many workshops and lis tened to very powerful speakers re garding women in leadership in In dian country. On Tuesday night of the conference, I participated in a fashion show where we modeled garments from Warm Springs Clothing Company. On Wednesday night, I danced in the social pow wow, where there were many people from here who were in participation. Also, my partner and I made the Thursday edition of the Oregonian while we were leading the two-step. On Thursday night, during the ban quet, I participated in the talent show and boogied all night during the SO's dance. With 1,100 women present, we were slightly short of men dance partners. As April falls upon us, I am be ginning my last term at Blue Moun tain Community College. I will be graduating from there with an Associate's of Arts Degree in Crimi nal Justice on June 10. With the exception of school, I am concentrating on the Miss Indian World contest. I will be leaving April 19 and will be selling tickests until then. The following people have raffle tickets and I am so grateful for their assistance in the sales of raffle tickets: Raydine Spino, Dorothy "Pebbles" Smith, Cecilia "Squille Greene, Roma David Cartney and Juanita Blodgctt. I will be here in Warm Springs mainly on weekends working, mostly nights at the police department if I need to be contacted. Or, I can be contacted in Pendleton during the week at 278-1576. I feel very confident and excited about the contest and I feel I will be coming home with the Miss Indian World title. To all those who have assisted me in my quest for the title, much grati tude goes out t you. When I am on the road traveling, I think of everybody here at home and thank God because I know I will always have great support. My prayers go out to all. Everyone knows what I m talking about. Une snowtire on the iront, a radial on the other front tire, and two dincrcnt tires on the back. The lights only work on dim, your antenna broke off so you replace it with a coat hanger. It never came with a set of keys so you touch two wires together to start it; a flat screw driver will open the trunk; and you can only get it on tne right side ot tne car. Plastic and duct tape cover a window that would cost more to replace than the car is worth. The gas gauge doesn't work, so you carry a bleach bottle ot gas just in case. Don t torget to buy all the discount oil you can, it takes a half-quart per mile. Never mind buying plates, the title is only six owners behind you. Just making it look like a title receipt is in the window Will do for a while, Everyone cringes when they see you because they know you'll either need a jump or a push. If you re late for work or an appointment you can always say "I had car trouble," and the boss or whomever w'll understand because you drive and Indian car. Don't forget about the front windshield being broken with all the spider web lines in it, we've all had to wear broken eye glasses at one time or another. When it finally gives up the ghost, you grace your front yard with it. When someone approaches you to buy the car or some parts of it, you say "I'm gonna get it going again, it just needs a different motor". The truth of it is that the old beast is pretty hard to part with because it took you half way across the state the last time you went to a pow-wow. You bothered all the shade tree mechanics from one end of the rez to the other to fix it, but as soon as one thing is fixed another goes wrong, but never enough to keep it off the road for very long. Well, did you have a good Easter? Was it full of song, food, worship and praise? My Easter was interesung. As Pastor I had all of the above and then a special gift on Easter came. A phone call from family telling me that my father had died after years of struggle and pain. On the S unday to remember the gift of new life from Jesus Christ, my father went to have his time before the Lord. Easter is a gift of the Lord to allow us to look at death with different eyes and to think of death with a different heartand mind; (NEW LIFE). I thank God for such gifts and I thank you if you were someone who has kept my family in prayer for the last several weeks. Thank you. Pastor Rick Christ paid the dearest price Why not.... We are alwlays trying to do what's best for all ourTribal Members. The main concerns is for the livelihood of all household on the Reservation. Trying to find ways for employment, or some source of good income. When there is an industry that shows promise either for income or job opportunities or both, than there are careful studies made on these to determine if it would be feasible. When something shows great promise that would benefit the Tribes, preparations are made for a Referendum election by the Tribes. The leadership here is always trying to find ways to improve the status of the reservation. At the present time there is on the table a proposal to establish a manufacturing plant to manufacture fire resistant building components and other products utilizing diatomaceous earth and other materials on the Warm Springs ReservatioaThis appears to have great potential for providing employment and profit. Now it is the membership's duty to go to the polls whenever there is a referendum vote called for. Remember if you don't vote and there isn't enough of a turnout, the election will be invalid. Each time there is an election scheduled, it costs the Tribes many, many "Bucks," to set the election and if there isn't enough of a turnout, all these funds go down the drain. Many people talk of spending money foolishly, "Well, here's one way, if there isn't a turn out at the Polls. (Neigh) To the editor, The Cross of Jesus, When Paul writes of his 'Thorn in the Flesh" (11 Cor. 12:7) The word for thorn in Greek is almost identical with the Greek New Testament word for the cross of Christ. As an instrument of execution the cross was a stake sunk vertically in the earth (Paul's thorn), a horizontal piece was attached to the vertical portion, thus the Christian symbolism. Hence the quotation of Paul (Galatians 3:30) "I am crucified with Christ nevertheless I live yet not I, But Christ livith in me and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." Christ's death on the cross brought salvation (Col. 2: 14) (Eph. 2: 16) and the basis for Christian hope (Col. 1:20) and became the supreme symbol of the New Faith. Jesus paid it all!! "And the Spirit and the Bride say, Come. And let him that hearth say Come and let him that is athirst Come, and whosoever will let him take the water of life freely. SS SS SS Employee luncheon set The Employee Awards Luncheon will be held Tuesday, April 19, 1994 at the Warm Springs Agency Longhouse for the awards earned at the end of 1992. The tentative luncheon forthe 1993 awards will be September 20, 1994. The awardees and supervisors will be notified with a separate letter. The employee picnic has been scheduled for July 21, 1994.
