The logging in the Northwest is nearing an end in certain areas, as cutting limitations are imposed which is forcing many logging Co.'s and small mills to either sell out or shut down. With all the slack with the woods works there are many jobs effected and many losing their jobs. The Pacific Northwest depended on the Forest and Logging indus tries for survive and now have to find other means of making a living. A few years back there were trees that made a big D-8 cat dig in and chug to haul the logs to the landing. Many times Choker setters had to halter logs in order fro the skidders to be able to haul them in to the landing. Also many times only one log was a big load for one of those big D-8 Cats. Yep! the day's of the Choker-setters and the men at the landing are practically gone. The Cable Tech's and the Landing Engineers are gone. Cable Tech's (Choker Setters), the Landing Engineers, (Knott Bumpers). Today one skidder can haul several logs but they are not near what the logs used to be. Today a person has to stoop down to sit on a log and in the olden days they had to jump up on the logs to sit and rest Today what they call big logs are what used to be almost normal back in the Logging days. Today when there is a Timber Tour to the woods there are no more huge Yellow Pines or those huge Douglas Firs that used to stand tall. Today the tours wind through areas of Block Gear Cuts where they view the newly planted trees which will take years before they are harvest able. The tours usually view the Gopher controls areas as they seem to feed on the tender roots of the newly planted trees. The newly planted trees also have to contend and compete with the snow brush and other heavy under brush and sometimes the Snow brush smother out the little trees. It is noticeable when the new planted trees pop out over the snow brush that they start to take control which shades the under brush and slowly kills them off. Yep! It takes years for these trees to become marketable, and it depends on the climate. If it is rich and fertile soil the trees can grow much faster. What little timber that is pretty good and large are usually in the Wilderness area where they cannot be harvested. Yep! We've got to find other means of income other than the timber industry for income. Tonya Harding and Ole Bob Packwood, these two really have been making the news lately. Now that Tonya's hearing won't come about until next summer, I suppose things on her will die down for a while, and Ole Bob Packwood will be making the scene once again. Yep! Ole Packwood sure has had it pretty rough this past year even though there are things people should be thankful for. On the job Packwood has done some good things that no one wants to admit. But because of all the accusations he has been getting on sexual harass ment No one wants to acknowledge these positive things he has done. Think I'll change the subject and mention traffic tickets. Just recently an article appeared in the Bend Bulletin of the increase in charges on traffic tickets. I sure whoever thought those things up, to up the fines ment well but for what? So now when you get a ticket for some traffic violation it will cost ooodles more than what it used to. So what happens? Well it sort of opens the doors for a good Con man, as he knows all the cops are busy trying to outdo one another in writing more traffic tickets than the other guy.gives him an open path to steal things. Vandalism seems to be on the up swing swing here lately and it's probably because all the cops are trying to find speedsters. They are so busy watching the roadways they don't have time to investigate thefts. Yep! Each cop trying to out do the other cops in who can write the most traffic tickets. And at the end of the year at the Policemen's banquet Ole Sargent Pencil Pusher will get an award for the most tickets issued. Well, any way those traffic tickets are out-rages causing cops to let up on other duties and sit along the roadside watching for speedsters. AHH-NAHH-CHI-TOON! ! ! The young man tells the officer to hit him so he can get the officer in trouble. He knows this, he wants to make it happen. He tries to use language to get to the officer. Every foul word in the book is used. The youth turns his words to the officer's family. His wife and childrenThe youth turns his words to threats against the officer. The youth does not let up from being taken from the center to the jail. The youth does funds needed to adequately cover costs.
