PAGE 4 October 16, 1992 Warm Springs, Oregon SpilyayTymoo Editorial E Ccosh EEWA: (The way it is) Letters to the Editor "Let's save the fish!" This seems (o be one of the big issues today across the country. It ap pears the fish arc becoming an endangered species more and more each day. Everyday there is something about the fish prob lems, the dams on all the rivers, water pollution, the hydro plants, the sports fishermen, and they even blame the Indians for dwin dling the fish runs. People blaming each other, probably to cover up what they arc doing to harm the fish runs. All the water users blame the oth ers for over-use of stream flow. Farmers, livestockmen, fish and wildlife and many more all have a hand in damaging the fish runs. This can revert back to the old Indian traditional beliefs and that's the water is the backbone of life. Without water we would all perish from the face of the earth. It is the tradition to respect the water in the Indian religion and before any food is taken, water is recognized first of all. "Choosh!" Instead of blaming each other, other aspects should be considered. With today's drought conditions all the reservoirs are far below normal and even in critical stages in some areas. The stream beds arc much lower than usual and the stream turns warm, how docs one expect the fish to survive through that? What we need is a change in the weather conditions to where we can get more moisture. A better snow depth in the higher mountains and hope the water levels will come to normal stages once again. Take Eastern Oregon, for example, where there are plenty of lakes where the water was plentiful. Today, there are dust flats now visible. . Perhaps someone should go out and do the rain dance and hope for f some moisture to come and relieve this mess. It will take a lot of rain to get some of the streams a-going once again. And once the water levels are back to near normal then the fish may have a chance to reach their spawning areas. In the olden' days, all the tribes would gather at the famous Celilo Falls during the big fall run to catch their share of fish. Even at that, they d idn ' t hurt the salmon runs. Today, all those hydro plants from the dams on the rivers show a great impact on the fish runs and the returns are getting smaller all the time. There are salmon and fish hatcheries all along the rivers by the game departments and the Indian tribes, who are trying to preserve the valuable fish runs. Each year, small salmon are released to migrate to the ocean and to return when they become adults, but the returns are not there. "So, where is the problem?" Maybe someday we will be able to find the solution, but for the present time, it is serious. Ahh-Nah-Chi-Toon! ! In-Mi-Mah-Tun-Nun-Mah: We all encourage education to our children. Education is one of the highest priorities here in Warm Springs, to equip our children to be ready to face the world. I don't or can't count the number of times when I've heard the advice given, "Go away to school, get an education and come back and work for your people." That really sounds good and it is a good policy to have in mind. There are several factors that are a negative mark that the young have to face today and we, the Tribes Of Warm Springs, should take these things into consideration. They are, number 1, education; 2. the residency policy; 3. the adoption policy; 4. wages; and 5, recreational activities here. The first two items mentioned above, education and residence, must be addressed. We have to really think about these issues and start finding ways to meet situations that arise from this policy. This leads' right into the adoption policy. There have been times when a person has shown an honest effort to make his goals. To get an education, but in order to have hisher children enrolled they must reside on the reservation for the past three years. How can a person get an education and live here at the same time? Toe Ness There was these two guys who met in a narrow street where the cars couldn't pass. First guy pokes his head out of the window and yelled. "I don't back up for no dumb idiot." The other guy answered, "Well I do, put it in reverse and backed out." YIKES SS SS SS Ole Tom asked his friend, "Were you hired at the radio station?" "N-n-no, they s-s-said ah, ah I, w-w-wasn't t-t-tall enough?" YIKES SS SS SS "They say my grandfather was a great politician in his day." "Yeah, "What did he run for?" "The boarder."
