Buffaloes It was winner lake all, well Tor the time being, as the Madras White Buffalo boy s basketball team handled the Baker Bulldogs in top fashion beating them 76-53, to take sole possession of Ant place in the COL standings, on Saturday night Febru ary 15. 1992. The win gave the two schools a Cochran wins Sweetheart Run The annual Warm Springs Reser vation Runners Club had their annual Sweetheart run on Saturday, Febru ary 8, 1992 which began at the Simnasho Fire Hall. Overall results were as follows, for the two mile run Evan Cochran crossed first with a time of 17:37. Evalinc Patt followed shortly behind at 18:10. Nancy Kirk was third in the two mile event with a time of 22:24. Val Squicmphcn placed fourth with a 24:10 time. George Thompson was fifth at 26:38, Salcna Thompson in sixth at 26:39 and Barbara Poncho crossed at 29:04 The overall finishers in the four mile competition were in first, Don Courtney at 26:58, Andy Leonard was second recording a 28:28 time. Cal Poncho was third with 30:06 lime, Joe Tuckta had a 32:38 time for fourth. Lana Shike was fifth at 32:48, Tony Boise crossed at 32:54, Oliver Kirk had a time of 34:47,Tom Bcgay recorded 37:23 while Sylvia McCabe clocked in at 39:12. Jkl l J&tmttm mill r""' top Baker split in the scries for the year as the Baker Bulldogs beat the Buffalos by the score of 67-64, earlier in the season on their home floor. This was the only loss suffered by the Buffs this season.. Buff coach Joe Blincoe said the boys played real hard and were ready Cochran and Nancy Kirk who aver aged a time of 20:00, George liiompson and Barbara Poncho av eraged a time of 27:5 1 . while Anthony Boise and Salcna Thompson aver aged 32:01. In ihc four mile run, Andy Leonard and Lana Shike av eraged 30:38, while Tom Bcgay and Sylvia McCabe averaged 38:17. In singles division the first male to cross the two mile run was Evan Cochran and the first female was Evalinc Patt. The first male crossing the four mile run was Don Courtney and Una Shike was the first female to cross. Bulldogs for this game, they knew what they had to do to get the joo oonc. For the Buffs it was like letting out on the clutch and peeling out, jumping out to a 24-13 first quarter lead. By the time the half time in termission came the Buffs were out in front 42-33. In the third quarter the Bulldogs ran neck N' neck with the Buffs as each team scored 12 points apcice, but the margin was still in the Buffs favor. By the time the final quarter was ncaring the end everybody on the team saw action. Madras out scored the visitors 22-18 for the final score. Scott Moses topped all scorers with 20 points including two 3 point baskets, Ryan Boyle added 17 and he alsocontributcd a three pointer, Ryan Grotc chipped in 17 points to share scoring honors with Boyle. Shane Barnes 11, Leif Suppah 7, Suppah also had a three pointer. Jcb Buttlcr4 points, Spencer Gcrke, Tom Nort9on, Scott Dalcmatcr. Shane Dcpuc was high for the Baker City boys with 16,Ryan Baxter 11, Jamie Clausintzer 9, all three K inters. The league is winding down to where all the games are real impor tant for the Buffs with the state play offs just around the comer. The Buffs will have to continue winning to be elgible for the state play-offs in March. Their next games are on the road as they take their swing to the , far east side of the state to meet the Ontario Tigers and the Nyssa Bull dogs. Those teams are always tough on their own home courts. Madras White Buffalo girls beat Riverside Pirates The Madras girls varsity basket ball team held off a last quarter lunge made by the Riverside Pirates and getting the win by the score of 47-44, on Friday night February 14, 1992. The host team Riverside jumped out to an early lead putting Madras in a catch up situation. Riverside came out strong and scored well. The Madras girls couldn't buy a basket at the start of the game, missing shots from right under the basket. This is an annual event and hosted by various schools each year. This year the California School for the Deaf in Riverside, California, will be the site. Oregon played Riv erside in the first game. Other schools entered were Fremont, California, Arizona, Phoenix, Arizona, Wash ington, and Idaho. There were no results of the tourney at press time. A report on the tournament will appear in a later edition. Coach Fred Blackman said the girls played a very smart game and executed well at times. Riverside, the only team to travel to Ontario and beat the Tigers on their home court were out to get the Buffalo girls and at times it appeared they were just going to do so, but the Buff defense tightened up to slow down the taller Riverside girls. SPO Ontario Tigers for the lead in the GOL standings as the race for the title is down the home stretch and season ncaring its end. With time running out there was just one point difference when Luanne Foltz was fouled and she stepped up to the free throw line and sank two important shots to give the Buffs the three point lead. The Riv erside girls made a desperation shot for a three pointer but missed as the horn sounded to end the game giving the Buffs the win. Saturday . The following week they will host the Ontario Tigers who are the only team to beat Madras so far this season in league play. Than they will travel to McLaughlin to meet the Pioneers for their final league game of the season the fol lowing week. V
