Little do critics realize this is a new year, a new team that is on their own path with their sights set on this year's state basketball tournament. Should they achieve their goal its not because they were runncr's-up of last year but through their own efforts of hard work. Yep! we do have players from that team and players who have gone on through graduation. On the night of December 10, 1991, The Dalles Indians came to town only to be set back by a deter mined Madras team by the score of Buffs topple Grant Union 13-7 TheBuffs jumped out toa 13-7lcad in the first quarter and never appeared to be in any danger from there on as Ryan Boyle went on a scoring spree leading the way to victory with a total of 26 points and a bunch of rebounds. The Buffs extended their lead 25-16, as the intermission came.The Buffs continued to control the game in the third quarter adding 17 more points to Buff gals The Madras girls got the jump on The Dalles Indians girls basketball team for the lead and kept the host Indian team sewed up all evening long to get the win on their home floor by the score of 54-44. The Dalles girls were in a catch up situ ation as the Buff gals lit up the score board for the early lead. It wasn't until after 4 minutes of play until the Buffs tied the game at 2 each and from there they went on a little scoring spree to build their lead which they never lost the rest of the night. The Dalles made some at tempts to overtake the determined Buff gals but were not able contain them long enough to get near. With the consistency of Michelle Crook County girls top Buffaloes The Crook County cowgirls came to Madras to hand the Buffs gals their first defeat of the year by the score of 78-55, behind the smooth operating Kelli Kronberger who scored 28 points to top all scorers for the night. This was the first test for the Buffs for the new season. During the beginning of the game it was a pretty close contest where the Buffs held a one point lead at the end of the first quarter by the score of 17 16. But in the second quarter the Cowgirls put it into gear and started pull away from the Buffs. As the first half came to an end the CC girls were out in front 43-33, and from that point on they were never in any trouble of losing the lead. The Buffs did close the gap a little in the third quarter out scoring the cowgirls 15-10, which was Warm Springs The Warm Springs Reservation Runners are currently sponsoring a 100 mile club. It began on December 1st and will end on February 29th. It will be $10 per person, which in cludes the log and a T-shirt. The first male and female to reach 100 miles within the time frame will receive an award. Walking and running are the only forms of exercise allowed. The deadline to enter is December 31st. The Runners are all excited about trying this and hope that a lot of people will get involved. Be on the look out for 100 mile club board with the names of participants and their mileage. Also, if there are enough participants, the club will attempt to have a luncheon. For more informa tion on the 100 mile club, contact Val Squiemphen or Gladys Squiemphcn. The club is currently selling T shirts for $5 each. The club has a lot of T-shirts left over from the last two Pi-Ume-Sha runs.They also have T shirts from the Tygh Valley run, last year's Veteran's Day run and their club T-shirts, if anyone is interested in purchasing one. The Buffs out scored the visitors in the first three quarters but in the final period The Dalles came storming back. After one quarter of play the score was 16-1 1, and at the end of the second quarter the Buffs again out scored the visitors 1 5-1 1 to make the score 31-22, at the inter mission. In the third quarter it was a pretty even match but the Madras boys man aged to out score their opponents by the score of 19-17. In the final stanza The Dalles Indians made a run at the White Buffalos lead, out scoring Madras 16 1 1 , but that wasn't enough to over take the led away from the Buffs but were un able to do so as the Buffs went on to cap an easy victory with the final score Grant Unions 7, giving the Buffs the big edge of 4Z-ZJ. in the final quarter both teams were able to score 1 7 points apcice for the final score of 59-40, giving the Buffs their first win of the year. Besides Bovlc's 26 points, Scott Moses added 12, Lief Suppah 9, Ryan Grotc 7, Mark Harris 2, Shane Barnes defeat The Scmmilink under the basket made a big difference in the game. S he came down with some tough rebounds to help the Buffs stay in front of the host team. Simmclink led all scorers with 21 points. Becky Dodson had an exceptional night, especially on offense where she burned the nets for 14 points, also contributing on de fense as wellLaura Sahme turned in a good performance on the offensive side of things, where she had several key assists to the big kids under the basket for easy shots. She also con tributed 8 points to the cause. Shirley Allen had a three pointer and a couple of baskets for 7 points and was good on defense during the game.Margie not enough to overtake the Cowgirls lead .At the end of three quarters of play the score stood C C 58, the Buffs 48. In the final quarter the Cowgirls came storming back on a 20-12 ram page over the Buff gals for the final score of 78-55, and the win. Illness was a cause of a slow down on the B uffs team as some key players were playing despite of colds and other ailments. For the Buffs it was Michelle Semmilink led the scoring for a total of 16, Becky Dodson 14, Laura Sahme 6, Arlinda Duff 5, Margie Durrette 4, Jennifer Runge 4, Launne Foltz 3, Allison Kirch 2 and Clowere. Kelli Kronberger ripped the nets for 28 points for the Cowgirls and to tip all scoring for the night Hawkins added 22, Leasy 13, Ki. Boles 5, Rowden 4, Runners sponsor three...or....). They will be setting up a table at the Christmas Bazaar, trying to sell their T-shirts. Hoping that people will come down and try them out for size. Hopefully, between now and February 29th (the end of the 100 mile club), the club will be spon soring a run or two. Watch for flyers. For any information on the club Mt. View wins Ochs Tournament The Mountain View Cougars won the Madras Nels Ochs Invitational Wrestling tournament, Saturday De cember 7, 1991. Ml View Scored a total of 44 points to take the meet, with the Pirates ofRiverside from Boardman taking second place with 40 points and the Host Buffs placing third with 38 points. The Bums Hilanders placed fourth with 26. MHS Boy's Holiday Tourney December 14 and 15 Starting time: 5:45 p.m. Spilyay Tymoq The Dalles of 61-55. Egcland was the leading scorer for Grant Union with 15, Jay Woods 8, Labhart 8, Halpuch 3, Jeremy Woods 3, Parkcr2,Lenzl. The Buffs will host The Dalles Indians, December 10, 1991, with game time at 7:30 p.m. Dalles Durette also had a good night on both offense and defense and added 3 points to the win for the B uffs. Luanne Foltz came off the bench and added some punch for the Buff gals both on the defensive and offensive side to keep the pressure on the host Indian team. Arlinda Duff who was one of the starters for the game had a good night on defense and played well. Others who saw action were Allison Kirsch, and Heather Clowers. The whole team showed m uch im provement since their first outing and were right in the game all evening long. Their next game will be Satur day afternoon at 3pm, against Cottage Grove. Ke. Boles 4, Sigman 2, Cotterson, Merritte, and Cosgrif fe. The Buffs were cold at the foul line missing several attempts while the Crook County Cowgirls were deadly at the charity stripe. The Cowgirls were called for26 fouls and the Buffs were unable to capitalize on them, while they them selves were called for 21 infractions.There were two who fouled out of the game, one from each team. For CC it was Ke Boles who commit ted five fouls to eliminate her from the game and for the Buffs it was Shirley Allen who ended up with five fouls. ' Their next game will be against The Dalles Indians, where they will travel to meet them on December 10, 1991, with game time at 7:30 P.M. 100 mile club or any activities, contact one of the officers: Chief Smith, President!
