PAGE 4 October 18, 1991 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo Editorial E Coosfa EEWA: (The way it is) Letters to the Editor "ty Spoolts" Thank you for making namegiving ceremony special dlTVflfcniTORl The General Council meeting set for October 22, 1991, in the Agency Longhousc should prove to be very interesting since the announcement of the closure of the Plywood Mill this coming November. The main topic of the meeting will be the WSFPI report to the people which is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. With the present situation in the timber industry which has stirred up a lot of commotion just recently. One of the big distur bances is the lay-off of approxi mately 114 men who will lose their everyday jobs and a greater percent of them will be tribal members. One of the causes is blamed on a sudden dip in the timber market especially in the Plywood area. This will definitely have a big effect on the reservation with a little hope in sight in the near future. These General Council meetings are called for the benefit of all the Tribal Members. They should attend these meetings and get the facts there and not from hearing all sorts of rumors after each meeting as in the past. The General Council meetings should have top priority for every one, where they can listen to the report and make statements regarding their concern or they may offer suggestions that may have an effect on problems. Who knows someone might have good ideas but are not stepping foward to offer their remarks. There is a wide variety of problems that need clarification in timbermatters. The timber industry is one of the largest employers here on the reservation, with jobs in the woods, trucking, and jobs in the mill after getting the logs there. Remember it is your right to be heard of what you have in mind for the future or perhaps some suggestions that may be considered in dealing with the problems. The Tribal Councils efforts are there trying to do what's right for the Tribes and all tribal members should take that in consideration and plan to contribute input on these issues at the meetings. Don't depend on just a hand full of individuals who do attend the meetings all along. Remember the meeting will get underway at 7:00 p.m. (NIGH) or MISH-UN-CHA1 1 1 XX XX XX How privileges can be abused... At one time the Organization issued special cards to be used to purchase lunches or meals for Clients or Business Associates of the Confederated Tribes. These cards were issued to all the supervisors throughout the Organization. Well, everything seemed to work pretty well and went right as planned where the supervisors would purchase lunch for his visitor. After a while things started to get a little out of hand when there was a lunch staff meeting with one of the departments, this went from one group to another until finally there were so many lunch staff meetings you couldn't shake a stick at all of them. In some large branches there were many groups who were having lunch staff meetings, the Deschutes Crossing, the River Room and the lodge dinning rooms were all filled to where things sort of got out of hand. It appeared where some branches depended on these cards for regular lunch purchasing rather than furnishing their own, or for their clients, to a point where it was sort-of like Ripping off the Tribes. The over use of these cards created extra work processing payments for the lunches of all the departments where it was decided to discontinue the use of these cards. Today you don't see anymore staff lunch meetings or you never see a department all having lunch together. The supervisor is not the "Hot Shot" anymore and the group can care less for their lunch staff meetings where in the past lunch was provided. Now when a Client or an Associate comes to do business the supervisor has to put out and buy the lunch. In most cases the Client is stuck with the ticket because of his expense account."HOW DID THAT GRAB YOU?"...AHH-NAH-CHI-TOONM! Sincerely yours, Denise Smith Penitentiary powwow planned Theft of purse opened eyes To the Editor, On October 10, 1991, I went through a shocking experience, an experience I learned a lot from I went to Madras that morning and I was all excited to thank my son's birthday was coming up. I though I'd get a few things early and put them away for him for his birth day. I walked into Ben Franklin's with my best friend, we were walking through the store looking here and there for only 10 minutes when my purse disappeared out of my cart We hardly turned our backs. I couldn't believe it. I think back to the incident now and I know who took my purse, but what I couldn't believe was it was a resident of the reservation. I really don't think a non-Indian would bring my purse all the way back to War Springs and stick it in the post office slot. That was really foolish. You gave yourselves away right there. I remember the people who were in the store.. I knew how faraway you were from me. I wasn't aware of it until you left, right after I announced that my purse was miss ing. I really hope you're happy. I know that $121 will not last you long. And thank you for returning my purse with my important papers in it. That was all I really wanted back. If you were any smarter you would have though about that. Money is what made you a crimi nal, but money is what made me learn about people like you. Remember my name, Jessica M. Polk The Madras police and the stores will know your names, for the protec tion of other people. To the Editor, Peace and greetings to you.
