Even if the weather was a bit questionable, the events of the 22nd annual Pi-Ume-Sha Treaty Days Celebration went off as scheduled and, as the saying goes, there was something for everyone. A stroll across the powwow arounds offered aromas ranging from Indian tacos, to teriyaki beef stcks, to barbecued salmon to good old fashioned hamburgers. Even if one wasn't hungry, a fresh piece of fry bread could not be resisted. The traditional arts and crafts of tribes from throughout the United States tempted those with fat or not so fat pocketbooks. Paintings, beadwork, hand tanned hides, pottery, rugs and many other items could be found at the numerous stands set up near the Community Center. Dancing was superb at the powwow as hundreds gathered In the damp arena for the various dances. Men, women, boys and girls in their fancy shawls and bustles, traditional leggings and outfits mingled, twirled and twisted during the inter-tribal dances. When the dancing got serious, no finer examples of competition dancing could be found at any powwow. According to powwow emcee Nathan Jim, no one is discriminated against at a powwow dancing was not just for the Native American or svelte. The Wannabe Dance was held Saturday afternoon while the Fat Mans dance was held Sunday. Both were crowd pleasers and the participants were rewarded for their efforts. Of course there were other things going on in Warm Springs last weekend in addition to the powwow. If you tired of the dancing, you only had to wander a short way to the stick game area to find the cream of the crop at sleight of hand. Fast-paced Softball action, too, was only a short walk away. Those seeking the ups and downs of a rodeo could find that in Warm Springs, too. There was the annual Endurance Race, the Fun Run and the Fried Bread Open golf tournament, as well. Warm Springs has returned to its normal size once again. The quiet is a pleasant relief but almost deafening. Where did all the people go? To their homes, hopefully to return again next year. r I , r 1 ' - fu.it. 7J Regal royalty r mi s5 r a-- tjy - mm :? 1 J ( 5N ,.-v-,-, .... r - . r1 .
