This year it looks pretty grim as snow packs are at a low level and all the reserviors are far below for this time of the year. Looks like we may be in fora hot dry summer.' Could be a lot of forest and range fires because of the lack of moisture. The outlook is bad for farmers who use water for their crops. It also looks bad for the big cities and this year the situation may become critical. Most of the dams up stream near the head waters are way below normal and the outlook is not good at all. Looks like water will be on a ration basis in most parts of the country. The lush green lawns may turn yellowish brown this year in the cities. Maybe artificial turf would be the answer for the yards. Just think, No lawn mowing, or watering and stuff like that. But then that brings another problem, what would the man of the house do when he could be out watering and mowing the lawn. An that's the time of the year when they have all those re-runs on the "tube." "Desert Storm" display salutes military A display recognizing Jefferson County men and women serving in Operation Desert Storm, is being established in the main lobby of Mountain View Hospital and Nur sing Home in Madras. "Desert Storm: A Salute to Jefferson Coun ty Patriots" is the theme of the diplay which will be on exhibit as long as United States military personnel are engaging in the Gulf Conflict. "This is our way of recognizing and showing support for those Jefferson County residents serving in Operation Desert Storm" notes Administrator Ron Barnes. Family members of service per sonnel serving in Operation Desert Storm are asked to loan photo graphs of loved ones to the Hos pital District for the display. A brief background of the service man or woman is also requested. To the Editor, I would like to apologize to my children for making them suffer while 1 attend college. They stay, home while others go to "Disney On Icc"or"M.C. Hammer" con certs. They wear hand-me-down clothes or depend on the generosity of my family to loan me money or buy them gifts. No trips to the ocean, basketball tournaments or ( birthday parties during my years in college. There are many families that live worse than we do, I've lived far worse myself. That is why I'm trying so hard to finish college now, so 1 can provide a better life for us all. Love, Mom. Every Council meeting the in adequate funding of education is brought up. I feel hopeful evcry time I hear, "Education is im portant to ourTribc,""We want to encourage our people to continue their education," and "It's never too late to finish school." In spite of the continued support of tribal members, nothing is done to im prove the incentives for finishing college. In earlier years 100 financing and endless years of support al lowed some to misuse funds year after year while they worked on a degree. This misuse and abuse by previous college students has caused funding to be cut and skep ticism when any additional fund ing is asked for. Many do not finish, while others now enjoy the respect, profits and comfortable life a college degree can provide. I know there are many factors to consider in determining how to provide the means and subsistance to finish college. I cannot pretend to know the answer, but I do know that the present system of humili ation and insecurity is not en couraging. The stress of home work, grades, children, emergen cies, family problems and lack of money combine into a depression. It is far easier to live on welfare or give up and accept a low-paying job with no hope of advancement. Something must be done. Tribal members speak-up for education every meeting, and Council agrees that they continuously hear the complaints of "broke" students, and their parents. Students are "patted on the back" for continu ing school, but that doesn't help when increased costs of food and gas continue to rise with inflation. Our educated have already taken advantage of prior 100 financing, and know how it was abused; now that knowledge is used to deny equal funding to today's college students. Who holds the "purse strings? 1 will send my kids to you when they want an Icee, valentine cards or money for school pictures. It hurts my pride to always borrow, promise to pay it back next term, run out of money again, then borrow again Thank you everyone for your encouragement while IVe been go ing to school, it makes me feel v3 proud. "Thanks Mom and Sam A (I'll pay you back next term), :3 brothers and sisters that have y loaned me money, picked-up my .1 kids from Day Care, shared their clothes and their kids' clothes, and ,' cheered me up when things got j bad. And, thanks Levi Bobb, of Education Department for at least '', listening instead of treating me like yj a criminal attempting to steal tribal Vj money. I appreciate you all!! I pray I will finish college and , make us all proud, my family, my r children, my tribe and my Indian people. ' MM,W,-IJ,,, i-n i., ,,,, ,,,, ,,,,, Jl 'X - , - .,, , i i i ! y ' ') " - ' To the Editor, On August 13, 1990, my hus band Fred and I lost a very dear friend named Timothy Heath. No body could ever replace him, and as the days go by, it is now that we realize that we are still suffering from this loss. Even though we helped in a giveaway so that we (family and friends) could participate in com munity events, I'm beginning to realize that it is possible we may have made a mistake. What I am getting at, is that Timmy played a big part of our drum group, the "North Enders."He was an inspira tional teacher and leader who took drum singing seriously. Several times he spent the night because of us practicing powwow songs or singing Washut. Mostly Washut because we put Washut before powwow singing. Now my husband and I find it hard to sing. Even our last drumming at "Lincoln's powwow"failcd ourex pectations. Some of you may have witnessed our failure. I think part of it was because we acted as if Timmy was there, because he was dependable and took charge in singing and in business. It is very hard to carry on as a drum group when there has been a loss, one which had made such an impact in our group. At the powwow, I realize not all of our group showed up on time, but we made a go of it anyway. That was how Timmy thought, to "sing anyways." Since this is about the powwow, I would like to acknowledge that it was my husband Fred who do nated the Pendleton blanket to the winner of Men's Traditional Dan ce. He donated one the year before and said the same man won again this year. I asked Fred why he donated the blanket. He smiled and said. "I like tn watrh Tradi tional Dancers. I used to Tradi- tional Dance. When I was young I won a Pendleton blanket. I didn't know it was called that but I liked the pretty designs and was proud for a little while. Long time ago they used to give away blankets instead of money." I admire Fred because there is always a part of him that holds on to the logic of the past. Thank you ' for listening. Mrs. Olivia Kirk Wallulatum. Let your voice be heard To all Tribal Members, I am asking you to vote, and to help get the word out in the com munity to vote at the upcoming election on February 26, 1991 on the Health and Wellness Center. The Health and Wellness Center is an important issue, if our people don't have good health, we don't have anything. While I realize the '"jalth Center won't solve all our problems, it will take us a long way to helping improve the current situation. We all have our own thoughts about this matter, and your opinion is important. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with it, let your voice be heard by taking action and going to vote. YIKES SS SS SS Happy First Birthday to Joslah George Thompson (February 22) from, Mom & Dad To all my relatives and friends, This a letter of notice that I was going to have a memorial for my son Douglas Dixon Luton in A pril. As it will be one year April 8th. But I still feel very hurt yet. To me it seems too soon for a memo rial. So as it was set for the first Saturday in April to be held at the Wapato Longhouse. But since I can't feel right about this as of right now. So to all who mourned my son with me, and quit attending powwows and any other activities, and want to rejoin & release them selves may do so at any up coming memorials. As I am going to wait until a later date to have my dinner & stone setting on the same day. But I will post notices at Macys for all my friends & relatives to know. Besides I didn't think it's right for anyone to quit on our account. But my heart feels good that some of my family (like Marcilena Moody & Gibson Moody also Gene Samp son) Loved their Ya-Yah & Lip Pah enough to wait a year. Justine M.
