PACE 6 November Runners compete at The slate championship Cross Country meet was held at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon November 3. Top runners from across the state proved too much for the Madras White Buf falo team. After the race was com pleted and all the points tabulated Madras boys placed 14th team wise. Two Warm Springs tribal mem bers, Teri Courtney and Carol Miller, both members of the Mad ras High School girls varsity vol leyball team, were nominated for and received the second team all league award for the Greater Oregon League during an awards banquet November 5. Courtney, a sophomore, also received the Most Valuable Player and Most Inspirational awards. The MVP award is based on league Riverside defeats White "As I sees urn:" What can be more frustrating than not giving the home town fans the satisfaction of a win on the home turf? The Madras White Buffaloes ended their season on a sour note dropping a heart breaker to River side 27-28. It was a case of miss judgements on a couple of plays that gave Riverside good field posi tions where all the luck went to tie Pirates which gave them the win. This was the Pirates first Greater Oregon League win on the grid iron, since moving up to class 3-A from the 2-A ran s. The fol lowing arc how the Madras boys came in: In 60th place was Danny Story with 18:31.9; Ed Heath 85th with 19.06; Nathan Johnson 97th wiih 19:14.8; Lcif Suppah 103rd with 19:23.7; Darrin Earnest 1 1 Ith with 19:32.4 and Sam Wolfe 1 19th with 20.06.1. The Buff boys team consisting mostly of sophomores should be statistics and the inspirational award is determined by volleyball coach Margaret Sturza. Continued on page 8 This was a time that shouldn't have been taken lightly because they have put up a lot of points against teams in the G.OL that were pretty tough on defense and it hap pened they couldn't get a win until they came to Madras. According to the statistics, every thing was in the Buff favor. They out gained the Pirates yardage wise but the Pirates controlled the ball by getting more first downs than the Buffs. The Buffs struck first on a long run byHarrison who went in from the 26 yard line but the kick went wide leaving the score 6-0. with a defeat to the Riverside Pirates. I he Astoria Fishermen won the team title with 62 points; Taft III; Sweet Home 124; Glide 127; Rogue River 128; The Dalles 134; Silver ton 200; Reedsport 218; Hidden Valley 220; Myrtle Point 129; Rainier 237; Crcswell 284; Hood River Valley 288; Madras 294 and Philomath 198. The individual champion was Aram Hampson, of Rogue River with the time of 1 5:35 which is way off the mark set by David Frank of Gladstone back in 1978 with the time of 13:554.9, and that time still stands. Mike Donaghu of Madras ran the 5,000 meters in 16:05.8 as an individual winner in 1984. With ohly two representatives from the White Buffalo girls team this year as they were edged out by the Burns Hilandcrs at the district meet earlier this year, was Karen Riley a Freshman who came in 63rd covering the 3,000 meter course with the time of 12:28.2 and the other lone Buff representative was Arlinda Duff who came in 90th in that large pac of runners and her time as 13:08.2. Both Madras entrants can return next year and hopefully in a team wise situation. This year they were just edged out by two points for the title at the district meet. Philomath won the team title with 85 points; The Dalles 107; Hood River Valley 132; Rogue River 137; Myrtle Point 141; Asto ria 149; Glide 170; Henley 199; Sil verton 199; Sweet Home 235; Cen tral 271; Rainier 286; Gold Beach 323; Burns 323; Junction City 384. In any event when an athlete reaches the state meet it is an accomplishment for the kid and for the school. The kids did very well at state dispite not winning the champsionship or any individual honors.. .but still it is a great honor to compete at state. Buffaloes Riverside struck right back where they went in from about a long four yard run. The kick was good giving them the lead 7-6. As the intermis sion came around, the Pirates led the Buffaloes 21-14. With time running out the Buffs had a chance to tie the Pirates but the kick failed. Had they gotten the extra point it would have gone into overtime. But the score remained 28-27 as the time ran out for a heart breaker for the Buffs but a glorious win for the Riverside Pirates. ......
