Page 8 -Aurii 6.1990 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo Please keep appointments at dental clinic Broken dental appointments nurt the community, the dental program and you by wasting clinic time and denying treatment lor others. When an appointment is broken, two things may happen. The time is unused for providing dental care or a patient may be seen for emer gency treatment. Both situations are less than ideal for different reasons. When clinic time is not used for clinic care, that time is lost and the service is lost to the community. Wc all know how busy the dental clinic can be, and should be, and we all know that there exists an unmet dental need in the commun ity. Let's not contribute to the problem by wasting valuable clinic time and a community resource. Emergency treatment is needed treatment, but it is limiting in the type and amount of treatment that can be provided. It does not pro vide an opportunity for the com prehensive evaluation and caie that a person may need. So, what can be done? We can do plenty because we are not help less in this situation, first, a big responsiblity will be placed on individuals to keep their appoint ments. Second, the dental staff will cfcarly explain the appointment policy at the time of the initial exam, and third, the broken appointment policy will be strictly enforced. The broken appointment policy follows: I A broken -innMinf ment is I he failure to show up for care at appointed time or failure to notify COCC classes- available to help community members become better readers, Not pdid Continued from page 4 I usually don't expect people at a religious function to stiff the babysitter. To say the least, if I don't receive a payment from these Peyote peo ple, the Tribe will certainly hear from me the next time your reli gion goes up to our council, asking that you be recognized on this reservation. Jackie Estimo Any payments can be sent to PO Box 1143, Warm Springs, OR 97761. Job openings clinic it nours it advance of need to reschedule appointment. Emer gency situations are understanda ble and exceptions will be con sidered. 2. Two broken appointments will move an individual onto the wait ing list, and appointments as needed will be made for the 8 a.m. emer gency time. This policy may seem strict and excessive, but the problem of broken appointments continues to handicap the dental program and the com munity. Abuse of the appointment time will not be tolerated and the benefit of this action will hopefully be shared by all. Continued from page 3 writers and mathematicians. Obituary Lawrence August Smith Lawrence August Smith, the old est living member of the Grand Ronde tribe, died March 29 at Mt. View Nursing Home in Madras. He was born September 1, 1896 in Grand Ronde, Oregon to Jesse and Alice (Quenell) Smith. He was an excellent example of a hard-working, honest person who showed much compassion for peo ple and life. He gave and didn't expect things in return. He was kind to everyone and helped many people with his wisdom, a little money, moral support and took time to listen to people. He was loving and caring and believed that people should always try their best and take pride. He was very proud of his Indian heritage and often talked about Grand Ronde. Being a simple person, he manged his life roles to his best: maintaining em ployment, taking care of his fam ily, being a law abiding citizen, maintaing financial stability, help ing others, being trustworthy and honest, quietly sharing his concerns and ideas about his Indian people. He had a sense of humor and didn't spend time worrying about things, holding grudges, or judging others. His values and beliefe can be seen in his children, grandchildren and other extended family. Mr. Smith attended Chemawa Indian School and played in the band, as he had a natural ear for music, playing the cornet. Through out his 92 years, he lived in Grand Ronde. Salem. Falls City, Perry dale. Chiloquin. Klamath Falls, Sandy and Warm Springs. He was a hard-working laborer in the log ging industry and later worked for several prominent farmers in the valley as a contractor and eventu ally managed a small farm himself. Mr. Smith received a special recognition for having a perfect driving record during the 60 or so years he held a driver's license. Interests and hobbies included playing cards, playing a challeng ing checker game, smelt fishing, visiting and spending hours with his. grandchildren. He was a good role model for all his grandchildren. Surviving him are his daughters RoseMary Smith and Lorene Smith; Roy Langley; 3 1 great grandchild ren and two great-great grand children. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins from the Grand Ronde area and other parts of Oregon, Washington and California also survive.
