She wants them to get to know these people whoare both different and the same as each of the students. To help the students understand culture, Newman asks students to find out what their ancestral back ground is. She asks them where their great-grandparents came from and helps them "to make a connec tion with their heritage," she says. She also emphasizes that students "must not throw away what they've got," that is their culture. The artist, who has traveled to many countries in the world, wants to see people learn about each other. It is in this way, she feels, "we will achieve peace." To meet this end, "children are our greatest resource," she adds. The Astoria, Oregon based artist has taught classes in schools in elementary through college level for fifteen years. "Dance is my love,"she relates. She is anxious to share it with others.
