G PAGE 4 February 23, 1990 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo Editorial E Coosh EEWA: (The way it is) Letters to the Editor A v - -A "Spityay Our school kids are our future leaders. We should feel proud of our kids who are in school today and doing so well, learn ing to live in today's society as times are rapidly changing and where people are trying to do away with the Indian rights and the treaty that we must protect at all times. The children are our backbone of the future and they should be taught the right thing today on how to protect what is rightfully theirs. We should feel proud of the kids who have participted in athletics at school during the year. We have had some out standing football players, some who have been invited to play football in Europe during the off-season. We have had good representation on the cross country team which has done well at state. We have had a good showing on the wrestling team this year, and even at the present time the state meets are not underway but we hope to have kids there. We have had representation on the basketball teams, both boys and girls, right from the freshman squads to the varsity teams. We are hoping they can make the state play-offs. There is the spring sports peering in the wings and hopefully we can have a good turnout in track, softball and golf. These are things the kids should be looking at. Who knows, maybe from one of these sports someone can really benefit in the future by school particiption, get a scholarship and go on to college and become a teacher, a coach at some school. The kids should be taught to look to the future and forget other activities that take place around here like these tournaments that are taking place and managers of these ball teams either softball or basketball, should leave kids alone who are participating in school sports. This could jeopardize their participation in school activities, could cause them to lose a posi tion on the varsity team, because it has happened in the past. The Billings Gazette of Montana had a series of articles on Indian basketball players and where they are today. In their arti cles they said that the Indian kids almost dominated the basketball games during their high school days, but after high school they faded away and no one knows what happens to them. We've had some good athletes in the past who could have done well in college and have faded away. We could use people like that, ones who could go on to college to get an education and come back and teach the younger kids what it's like to be able to participate on the outside world. We need people to go on and come back as coaches, teachers to teach the children the right way of life, and plan for the future for themselves and not stick around here and play basket ball for T-shirts and stuff like that. Like it is said, the kids are our future and we should be preparing them for their role in life as future leaders of the reservation. Ahhh-nah-chiToon!!! Toe Spilyay Sez: "Keep smiling. Speafo" Ness SS between SS i do" and "You'd When is child abuse, To the Editor, My people, this is such a difficult topic of discussion for anyone. Try to contemplate the idea that your child, niece, nephew, cousin, grand child has been sexually abused. Child abuse is defined as when a child receives bruises, cuts, mental abuse, etc.; child neglect is when a child has been left home alone without a proper caretaker, no clean clothes, several referrals for head lice, missing too much school without an excuse, parent arrested for alcohol and or, drug charges with children in the vehicle, and last but not least, leaving children with a babysitter without adequate food, pampers or just plain left with babysitters too long and not picking them up. For January, 1 990, there were 43 cases of child abuse, child neglect or child sexual abuse reported with eight of those deemed as unsubstantiated or closed because the children were deemed safe. For the month of February, to date, there are 14 cases of child' abuse, child sexual abuse or child neglect reported with four unsub stantiated or considered safe... My dear people, when is all this going to stop? When are we going to do something to help each other, to keep our children safe from child sexual abuse, child abuse or child neglect? With the average of 1.4 cases being reported a day, we all need to be aware of this problem. The babies being born today are being born drug or alcohol addicted and in need of permanent doctor's care. Then, their born to be abused or neglected or even die because their poor little bodies aren't strong enough to combat simple pneu monia or an ear infection, easily get ill because their bodies don't have the strength to fight off simple infections. To our daughter, Janice, many more years to follow. Keep up the good work. Love from Mom, Dad, Don, Sisters & Nephew Get vets going To the Editor, Like most Vietnam veterans I have always been reluctant to be involved with any veteran organi zations. But because a few Vietnam veterans talked me into joining the VFW, I started going to a few Continued on page 8 When is all of this going to stop? When are we going to get responsi ble to care for our children? This is a community problem. When are these young parents going to stop losing custody of their children and begin working to get that custody right back? Why are grandparents having to raise so many granchild ren? It used to be custom awhile back for a grandparent to raise one or two, but today, it's sometimes three to five children And then it's the grandparent's responsibility to keep the children safe, fed, going to school, etc. Day of hugs a popular hit To the Editor, There were $240.75 worth of "HUGS" given out on-Valentines Day. That was a good, good day for receivers and senders and also good for the givers of the"H UGS". Special thanks to Mollie Marsh and Eraina Palmer of Extension, Austin Greene from Recreation, Williiam Moses of Prevention, Gayle Rodgers from Human Resources and John Nettleton of Day Care for helping give "HUGS". If you were expecting a HUG and did not receive it, you were probably away from your office or desk at the time of delivery. We would have liked to have given eve ryone a hug, but time was limited. Some " H ug-O-G ra ms" were sent to the school for kids, but we chose not to go to the school as some children may have felt left out. We hope to plan a "Hugging Day" at the school for parents, kids and teachers. So, give your kids that special hug at home each day. Next year, we hope to add a couple of days to deliver HUGS as one day is not enough. If you have any suggestions or wish to volun teer, then feel free to call us at the "Spirit of the Warrior" conference successful To the editor, As we review the Spirit of the War rior Conference we conclude that this conference was long overdue for the veterans, their families, co workers and communties. Don't make the police, tribal court or community services be responsible for making sure our children are safe. We, the people, families, need to make ourselves responsible to our children to make sure our grandchildren, nieces and nephews and cousins are not re moved because of pure neglect, sexual abuse or child abuse.
