Willie and Laura Fuentes finally have a place to really call their own. Fol lowing five months of construc tion, the Fuentes family, including their three children, moved into their spacious new home on Miller Flat January 5. Home builder George Aguilar, Sr. built the 2,483 square foot home in compliance with strict Super Good Cents Home codes. The home qualified the Fuentes' for a generous rebate from Pacific Power and Light. The use of numerous zonal heaters also quali fied the Fuentes' for another rebate sponsored by PP&L. - Anyone interested in learning more about the Super Good Cents Home rebate should contact Sig Skavlan at PP&L in Madras. Culture Fair, March 1 Buff Elementary sixth grade student Vanessa Langley reviews copies ofSpilyay Tymoo published in 1978, theyer she was born. She plans to use information obtained from the newspapers in her Culture Fair exhibit, March 1 at Buff Elementarv. Free blood pressure, sugar tests Free blood pressure and blood sugar tests will be sponsored by Mountain View Hospital and Nursing Home later this month. The screening will be offered from 9:00 a.m. until 1 1:00 a.m. on Tues day, Februray 27 at the hospital and al the same time on Wednes day, Februray 28 at the Culver City Hall. The hospital staff encourages area residents to take advantage of the free screenings. The tests are done on a first come, first serve basis and usually take only a few minutes. They may be helpful in detecting signs of hypertension or diabetes. Those wishing to take part in the screenings at the hospital should use the new emergency room entrance. Ample parking is availa ble off of "A" Street. The Culver screening will be held at the City Hall on 1st Street. For more information call Cathy Luther at 475-3882. There will be a three-man team cow penning, mixed and junior, senior team roping, open, novice, junior and pee-wee barrel racing, a stick horse race, sheep riding, and a call your dog race. There is no admission charge and the kitchen will be open. The day's activities will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the speeches and modeling by the fair court contest ants. Fashions will be provided by Olsen's Western Wear for the modeling segment of the competi tion. The logo will be used for T-shirts and other advertising purposes. The Cascade Children's Festival is the annual fund raising event for Central Oregon Battering and Rape Alli ance (COBRA). March 19-21, is the month to open homes in our community. Approximately 45 students and advisors will be attending. Students will arrive Monday and depart Wednesday. Tour of Jefferson County pro vided by OSU Warm Springs Madras Extension Service. Anyone willing to host a student or stu dents this year can do so by calling 553-3238 or 475-3808. The time taken by local families to help make this exchange a posi tive experience for students many miles from their homeland is much appreciated. The Lincoln's Birthday Powwow committee paid out over $ 1 7,000 in prize monies and other awards. The cooks were paid $8C0; the clean-up crew, the Sidwalter Run ners Club, was paid $200 and the championship judges were paid $ 1 20. Tribal Council donated $ 1 ,500 for food and the committee added another $700 for food. The committee conducts various fund raising events throughout the year and performs at numerous functions, including workshops and conferences, does salmon bakes, auctions, raffles and collects indi vidual donations. All proceeds go toward powwow expenses. Committee chairman is Pierson Mitchell; whipman and whipwo man are Raymond "Captain" , Moody and Melanie Colwash; Charlie Tailfeathers and Rudy Clements are emcees; Anna Cle ments is in charge of the raffle and royalty; Richard Craig and Kate Jackson coordinate the crafts and concessions; Rudy Clements is drum coordinator. Geraldine Blod gett and Louise Hellon run the kit chen and Anna Clements and Kate Jackson serve as treasurers. Fern Begay runs a mini raffle each week in conjunction with the auctions. Geroge Clements, Sr. is in charge of contest judging; Jacob Frank, Sr. is contest point totaler and the three sisters, Nettie Shawaway, Matilda Mitchell and Sylvia Wal lulatum, and elders Florence Mea nus, Herb Stwyer, Sr. and Ellen Squiemphen conduct the Sunday auctions. Recognition Awards Jacob Frank, Sr. was awarded the Herb Stwyer, Srj Recognition award and received a Pendleton blanket and $100 cash. Local Fire and Safety personnel and Jefferson County firefighters were present to burn the 50-year-old house. It is believed that the house was part of the barracks at the air base in Madras.
