New football
for next season
Like a new kid on the block there
is a new feature for the coming
footbal season and thats a fluores
cent football which was designed
by Charles O. Finley.
According to a person with the
Oregon State Activities Associa
tion (OSAA), the ball has been
approved by the National Federa
tion of State High School Associa
tions for use. It was also approved
by the OSAA for use next season
here in this state.
This is entirely up to the coaches
to decide on whichever they want
to use. The main feature for the use
of this ball is it can be seen much
better at night especially for the
pass receivers. At night is when
most of the high school games are
played across the country. The
stripes on the ball be be painted
length wise in fluorescent yellow
stripes. During the games the two
teams can use whichever type of
ball they prefer, they are not
required to use what the other team
is using.

were edged out by the Vale Vikings
65-58. They came back to post a
68-65 overtime win over the Onta
rio Tigers on their home court. The
last two games were on the road
which are always tough to win.
On January 20, the Buffs hosted
the Nyssa Bulldogs for their second
home GOL game. This was per
haps one of those times Nyssa
thought the bus should have broken
down or something because they
were almost blown out of the gym
with the final score 82-46.
The way it looked, the Buffs
were out to prove they are the"Best
in the West,"despite the two losses
earlier. Before the night was over
the entire bench got into the act
and all scored but one.
The Buffs jumped out to a 21-2
first quarter lead and never looked
back nor were they in any kind of
trouble the rest of the night. Mean
shile the Nyssa Bulldogs were tak
ing those desperation three-point
shots, hoping one would fall. They
did manage to gwet 8 three-pointers.
Nyssa's big quarter were the third
and fourth when all the regulars
were sitting on the bench.
Eric Petersen led the scoring for
the Buffs with 14, Commingore 13,
Harris 12, Earnest 10, Remo Smith
10, Collins 8, Sullivan 8, Scott
Moses 4, Holiday 2, and Boyle 1,
Jones.
This week the Buffs have just
one game on Saturday night when
they travel to Milton-Freewater to
meet the Mac Hi Pioneers.

Vale gets win in overtime
A basketball game for the first
place spot in the Greater Oregon
League took place between the
Vale Vikings and the Madras White
Buffalo girls on Friday January 19,
1990, as each team entered the
game undefeated in league play.
Although outmanned in height
and experience the White Buffalo
girls made it known they were no
push-over and took Vale right down
to the wire. At the end of regula
tion play the scoreboard lit up a
51-51 tic, forcing an overtime. This
was a game that could have gone
either way. Vale outscored the Buffs
in the first two quarters. After one
quarter of play, Vale 18, Buffs 16.
They outscored the Buffs in the
second quarter 14-10 and led at
halflime 32-26.
In the second half, the Buffs
made a great comeback to outscore
the Vikings 12-7 in the third and
13-12 in the final quarter. With
about three minutes left in the
game Vale started to play keep
away as they led with a pretty com
fortable score but with some tur
novers and a lot of hustle by the
Buff girls they were able to catch
up, first by a foul on Laura Sahme
where she made both ends of a one
and one and another on Becky
Dodson. She also converted on the
one and one leaving a score of 51
48. With time running out Vale
made a turnover and Becky Dod
son took a pass and made a desper
ation three-point shot where the
ball hit nothing but the net which
brought the almost packed house
to its feet with a roar and to see the
score tied at 51 apiece as time ran'
out.
On the opening tip the Buffs
blew a lay-up and a tip and fouled a
Vale player which sent them ahead
on two foul shots. Moses and Dod
son were the only ones who could
score in the overtime for the Buffs
and the Vikings went on a rampage
at the foul line where they collected
all their points in the overtime
period and to give them the vic
tory. Shirley Allen, Michelle Sim
melink and Laura Sahme all fouled
out. Allen and Simmelink during
regular play and Sahme during the
overtime period.

looked back as they picked up their
second league win for the year. By
half time the score was 19-9 and the
girls were in a comfortable lead,
out playing their foes in the first
two quarters quite handily. The
third and fourth quarters, it was all
Madras and the whole bench got
into the game and saw plenty of
action.

the Buff gals were on top 1 1-6 at
the end of one. And by half time
the score was 34-19, with the Buff
