Punt, Pass and Kick on tap It's the time of year again for the annual Punt, Pass and Kick com petition. The PPK is open to those seven to 12 years of age. Practice sessions will be held October 16, 18, 24 and 26 at Madras High School from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and at the Warm springs community Chief Spirits take second at tourney Be sure Teams compete in relay to make the first MHShome game, Friday Sept. 8, 7:30 p.m. Center October 17, 19, 23 and 25. Final competition will be held October 27 during halftime of the Baker Bulldogs vs Madras football game. T-shirts are available to all par ticipants for $8 each. Winner in the age 12 division will receive tickets to the Civil War Game between OSU and U of 0 November 1 8. Three pairs of tickets will be available. Saturday the Spirits played their first game against Nisqually I and lost 10 to 4. This dropped them to the losers bracket which meant if the Spirits wanted to win the tournament, they had to work hard to come back to the winning bracket. The second game was against a very voung team called the Li'l Ducks. The third game was played against Tulalip, Washington. The sun was setting and the game getting serious, Waldon Winishut got beaned in the head while running to second base and Easton Aguilar getting spiked on third base, squelching the double play that was in mind. The Spirits came out on top with the score 6 to 4. Sunday was just as intense as the Spirits advanced further around to the winning bracket. Their first game was against Nisqually II. There was good defensive playing on both sides throughout the game but the Spirits pulled through with the score being 3 to 2. A game away from championship, the Spirits went up against a local Muckleshoot team called The Bears. This game went scoreless until the fifth inning when the score became tied at one to one. The game ran into the ninth inning when a run was batted in to win the game for the Spirits. The championship game was against Nisqually I once again. Both teams were ready to play each other. The final outcome was Nis qually I 6, the Chief Spirits 3. The Chief Spirits won the second place sweatshirts. Donnie Winishut and Maria Minthorn earned all-star caps and the team coach, Ricky Minthorn received the award for Mr. Hustle. The other team members included: Paula Smith, Becky Aguilar, Lacey and Michele, Waldon Winishut, Easton Aguilar Five teams from Warm Springs entered the Hood to Coast relay August 25. The run started at Tim berline Lodge and ended in Sea side, Oregon. Each team consisted of 12 members plus an extensive entourage of drivers and two vehi cles. With over 700 teams entered, Stan Kneeland's team, the Jeffer son County Fast Prancers, came in 65th with a time of 20 hours. All members received medals. Terry Squiemphen, captain of the co-ed team, the Thirty Dozen, said his team completed within their projected time and all received medals. Their time was 26:40. This was the fifth year for some of the team members to participate in the run and for one couple, Dan and Fran Ahem, it was the first. The women's team, the Pant Hers, had to run with 1 1 members but finished at 30 hours. Team cap tain Monica Sampson was happy with the results. Sampson said, "It really made us feel good and almost made us cry to hear people cheer ing us on." The veterans of the run were Evaline Patt, Sandra Greene and Sampson. The other runners were first timers. The youngest three team members were Louisa Tuckta and Shaylene and Jolene Boise. The Sidwalter Striders team was made up of young men, aged 13 to 17. They came in at 23 hours and still had enough energy to take a dip in the ocean. They all received medals even though they were 40 minutes short of their projected time. The team was comprised of two boys from Montana, two from Redmond and two from Madras. The rest of the team mem bers were from Warm Springs with Alfred and Debbie Smith, Jr. being their sponsors. The fifth Warm Springs team, the Lazy Guys Club, with Jerry Sampson as team captain, finished with a time of 25:08. A lyssaMacy hands Shaylene Boise a Jug of water during relay.
