I he College's new Business Information Center has opened to help people in the office manage ment and services field to add. renew, and stay current in their office administration skills. Students may sign-up for courses in calculator applications, document and filing formatting, key board ing, proof-reading, word process ing and other job-related U pics. A Winter term, here we come! COCC schedules classes Central Oregon Community College (COCC) has scheduled several community education classes for winter term in Warm Springs. Registration for the classes, ranging from logging methods to photography, is being conducted at the Warm Springs COCC center on the second floor of the old boy's dorm. Logging Methods A three-credit college course that fulfills associate degree requirements in forestry. Overview and understanding of logging and timber harvesting. Covers falling, bucking, yarding systems, decking, "horse to helicopter" loading, trucking and unloading. On-site field trips to logging sites and mills. Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Old Boy's Dorm January 5 to March 10. Tuition is $64.50. Instructor is Rick Kraus. College Math A four-credit lab class. Choose from Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II or Intermediate Algebra. Great for brush-up, college prep, or to get ready for taking required math classes in your major. Meets Mondays and Wednesdays, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Old Boy's Dorm. Classes begin January 6 and continue through March 16. Tuition is $86.00. Instructor is Steve Heydon. Power Volleyball Lots of fun and great exercise! Let Julie Mitchell prepare you for local tournaments. Covers blocking, power serves, spiking and setting. Beginners welcome. Meets Tuesdays, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Warm Springs Elementary Gym. January 12 to February 16. Cost is $12. Womens' Self-Esteem Feel great about yourself! Let fashion expert Jeri Brunoe-Weiher teach you about clothes and color coordination, hair care, make-up and skin care, poise and etiquette. Teenagers 16 and over v come! Meets Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Old Boy's Dorm, January 14 to March 10. Cost is $18. Weaving Baskets with Reeds and Grasses Be creative and artistic! Make shaker cheese baskets, Appalachian, heart shaped baskets and market baskets. Lots of fun. Meets two Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Old Boy's Dorm. February 6 and 13. Cost is $10. Small lab fee to instructor for materials. Dorothy Zimmerman is the instructor. Painting Indian Art Paint "surrealistic" images with Indian themes. Emphasis on clouds and natural backgrounds. Acrylic paints. Beginners welcome. Meets Mon days from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Old Boy's Dorm. Classes begin January 12 and continue through February 15. Instructor is Patrick Reddog. Cost is $18. Art Photography This class stresses artistic pictures and compo sition, balance and perspective. Use your camera as an "eye". Field trips to places of interest on the reservation. Meets Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Old Boy's Dorm. Begins February 3 and runs until February 24. Instructor is Betty Cook. Cost is $10. ' . GED Classes Adult Learning Center Geoff Bury will be helping students get their GED diplomass this winter. He will also help anyone who walks in the door with a desire to improve their readin', writin', or 'rithmatic. Lots of new activities and computer "games" that are fun and educational. Spilyay Tymoo is published bi-weekly by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs tee of $21.50 plus a $5 lab fee is charged for each class and the class may be taken for college credit. The goal of the Business Infor mation Center is to provide timely and compatible access to instruc tion in Office Administration. Classes are short-term (20 hours for most topics) and are held at times that don't normally conflict with work schedules. Instruction is individualized and sell-paced. Pro fessional staff assistance and advice is available for all participants. Phone-in registration gains popularity Over three hundred part-time students at Central Oregon Com munity College took advantage of phone-in registration for Winter term courses. This is the second time that the College has offered credit registration by phone for its part-time students. From December 7-1 0.8 a.m. to 5 p.m. students could register for up to nine credits and reserve class space with one simple phone call to the COCC registration hot-line. Phone-in registration saves times for students and staff. On-campus registration for Win ter term will be held Saturday. January 2 from lOa.m.until I p.m. for part-time students. Full and part-time registration will also be held Monday. Hood National Forest has a present for people who like to play in the snow.. .four new sno-parks providing parking for 396 more vehicles. The new parking areas, which cost the Forest Service S325.000 to build, are located at White River, Bennett Pass, Teacup Lake and Clark Creek. All the sno-parks are located near popular winter trailheads on Highway 35. Last year's boom in winter recreation on the Forest by a spokesman, at your own expense. You may bring any documents you believe are relevant to this cause, and you may bring witnesses to testify on your behalf. "Both Hood River and Zig Zag have had an increase of about 600 percent in cross country skiers over the past ten years," indicates Kevin Slagle, Recreation Forester, at Hood River Ranger District. "Every year there are more people who want to get out and enjoy the winter scenery." Paul Norman, Recreation Fore ster at Zig Zag Ranger District, said that last year people frequently crammed more cars into sno-parks than the lots could hold, spilling over onto the highway. "It was creating an unsafe situation, and people were getting tickets," he said. "That's just not the kind of thing we want to see on the Forest. So we proposed the new lots to the State." The State Highway Divisions winter recreation Committee approved plans for the new sno parks. and the Forest Service con tracted Jim Turin and sons to con struct the lots. They were completed last summer, with the exception of Data Processing Effective January I, 1988 our department will change its name to 'Office of Information Systems' (O.I.S. for short). Pay Howlak Tichum Frances "Frenchie" Thomas Enrolled member of the Confed erated Tribes of Warm Springs, Francis Xavier "Frenchie" Thomas, 73, died at his residence in Madras, Oregon December 23, 1987. He was born to William "Win nie" Thomas and Elizabeth (Teais) Coon at White Salmon, Washing ton December 19, 1914. He attended school in Warm Springs and grad uated from Chemawa Indian School. He worked for Kaiser Company on Swan Island in Portland as an accountant until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944. He served in the Europe African Theater and in 1946, he received an honorable discharge from the service. A Chemawa school mate said, "Frenchie was well liked by everyone, he was known for being a gentleman. He had a great sense of humor." For many years he sang and par ticipated in the Warm Springs annuarSong of Haiwatha" Pageant at Warm Springs and various other communities in Oregon. His fea tured solo in the pageant was The Elliott Elliott Jaspei Yahtin, 33. of Warm Springs died December 23, 1987 at Mt. View Hospital in Madras, Ore gon. He was an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. He was born December 14, 1954 at Simnasho to Chesley Sr. and Joscpha (Meanus) Yahtin. During his younger years he lived in the Celilo area. He attended schools in The Dalles and Chemawa Indian school in Salem. Oregon. He was a member of 1910 Indian Shaker Church in Warm Springs. He had worked for the Tribes with the Util ities department, at Kah-Nee-Ta, at Warm Springs Forest Products and Oregon State University Exten sion. He had worked a year under the CETA program in the Tribal '- . f v'.W. .v.v; .vv.v i (!) r permanent rcstroom facilities, which for Forest Service will construct next summer. Each sno-park will have a sign stating the name of the area, and (railhead board with maps, safety hints and - A-ncy information. Throughout the winter, both Hood River and Zigag District will have trail crews skiing the various trails to correct problems, shovel snow into holes, contact skiers and dis tribute maps, collect use informa tion, and place temporary signs regarding trail conditions. Hood River Ranger District is currently looking for volunteers to join their winter trail crew. Interested skiers may call 352-6002. Permits are required for all sno parks. The permits cost $2.00 per day or $9.00 per season and may be purchased at all developed ski areas. Department of Motor Vehicles offices, G.I. Joes, many ski and sporting goods shops, and at retailers in the snow zone. Proceeds go toward the cost of plowing the sno-parks. any Personal Computer (Micros). Indian Love Call. Thomas worked for a number of years as a foreman in the BIA Roads department in Warm Springs. He also worked for Warm Springs Lumber Company and Cody Logging as a truck driver. He retired in the 1970s. His special interests were music and bird-watching. Survivors are a brother Leslie Thomas of North Bend, Oregon, twodaughters, Francis Jeannie Tho mas of Yakima, Washington and Jacqueline Rae Swanson of Seat tle, Washington; grandchildren John Halliday of Warm Springs, and Jeff Thomas of Little Boston, W A; Jim J. Halliday of Parker, WA; Lonna Jeanne Swanson attending Haskell Indian Junior College, Greg Swanson of Seattle and he was preceed in death by his eldest grandson Loren Halliday who's buried at the Agency Cemetery in Warm Springs and numerous nie ces and nephews living in the Warm Springs area. Yahtin printing office. His special interests were beadwork and fishing. Survivors are his father Chesley Yahtin. Sr.; his mother. Josepha Crowe; ten brothers. Edgar Yah tin. Owen Yahtin. Randy Yahtin, Virgil Watson, Walter Payne, Richard Payne, Chesley Yahtin, Jr.. Henry and Timothy Yahtin; five sisters, Linda Meanus, Minnie Yahtin, Josie Payne. Idelia Norton and Dorothy Yahtin grandmoth ers Annie Yahtin and Hazel Tewee, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Dressing ceremonies were held at Bel-Air Colonial in Madras on December 25 w ith overnight ceremo nies following at the Simnasho Longhouse. Burial was December 26 at the Simnasho Cemetery.
