People respond poorly to "you" messages
. . i f tiiMi rj riii:inii i itr rhiMr
Most ofthc messages we send lo
people aboul behavior are 'you
messages messages that are di
rected at the other person and have
a high probability of putting them
down, making them feel guilty,
malting them feel their needs arc
not important, and generally mak
ing them resist change. Examples
ol "you" messages are usually orders
or commands ("Stop doing that!
Get into the car."), or blaming or
name-calling statements ("You are
acting like a baby! You are driving
me cray!"). or statements that give
solutions ("You should forget that
idea. You'd better reconsider that
plan."), thereby removing the re
sponsibility for behavior change
from the other person. Perhaps the
worst of all "you" messages is the
if.. .then threat ("If you don't.. ..then
I will....").
An "I" message, on the other
hand, allows a person who is affect
ed by the behavior of another to
express the impact it has on him
and. at the same time, leave the
responsibility for modifying the
behavior with the person w ho dem
Microwaves should be cleaned
A clean microwave oven interior
is more than just attractive it also
ensures the best cooking perfor
mance from the appliance.
Infrequent cleaning may cause a
number of problems, such as:
Cooking time may be slowed
by a build-up of food particles on
the walls or floor of the oven. Food
soils absorb the microwave energy
that should be used by the cooking
food.
Food particles around the door
frame may keep the door from seal
ing properly or may even prevent
the oven from starting.
Unpleasant odors may develop
w hen food soils remain or build up
on microwave oven interior sur
faces. Follow these tips to help keep an
oven clean:
After each use. wipe the oven's
interior surfaces with a paper towel,
soft cloth or sponge dipped in a
solution of mild detergent and
water.

onstrated that particular behavior.
An "I" message consists of three
parts: ( I ) the specific behavior. (2)
the resulting feeling you experienced
because of the behavior, and (3) the
tangible effect on you. Thus, a
teacher might say to a student:
"When you tap on your desk
w ith your pencil. I feel upset because
get distracted and have difficulty
teaching."
A wife might say to her husband:
"When I try to help you and you
don't say anything. I feel confused
because I don't know how you feel
about my help."
In effect, the T message allows
the sender to implicitly say."l trust
you to decide w hat change in behav
ior is necessary." In this man
ner. "I" messages build relation
ships and. equally importantly, they
do not place the sender in the posi
tion of enforcing a new behavior,
as is frequently the case with the
"you" message discussed above.
In order to understand and use
the "I" message effectively, people
should be given a chance to prac-
Remove cooked-on food by
boiling one cup of water in a
bowl or a 2-cup glass measure
inside of the oven for several min
utes. The steam condenses on the
interior and makes soil easier to
remove. Wipe out with a paper
towel, soft cloth or sponge.
Clean stains from the oven
floor with a paste of baking soda
and water, a special ceramic glass
cleaner or a mild cleanser. Don't
use harsh cleaners or steel wool
pads. They can cause scratches or
rust.
Remove odors caused by strong
flavored foods (such as fish, cab
bage or garlic), burned fods, or
food soil build-up by boiling a
solution of Vi cup lemon juice and
one cup water in a bowl or 4-cup
measure for several minutes. Let
stand for 5-6 minutes in the oven,
then wipe clean.

4-H offers positive
. r i
Four-H focuses on the growth
and well-being of the whole child.
What on the surface might appear
to be a basic "hands-on" project is
actually far more involved.
Four-H activites teach young
people to identify needs, set goals
and plan how to accomplish them.
They learn through their experien
ces and by seeing the results of their
efforts. They become effective group
members.
These are all "life skills" we need
to live a healthy, fulfilling and bal
anced life.
For the past 75 years the philo
sophy and goals of the 4-H pro
gram have focused on enhancing
the lives of all involved.
The question is now: Are we
addressing the specific needs of the
children of the '80's and "90's? The
environmental and social pressures
they face are vastly different from
those today's adults were raised
with.
For example, 97 percent of
American homes now have at least
one television, and the average
young person 12-17 years olds
watches just under four hours per
day.
Children routinely see serious
life problems solved in an hour
long episode, and often solved
violently.
According to Child Psychologist

and you probably have the time to '
go get it.
This hrines us to an important
question however. What is needed
for your situation? When feeding
cattle in the winter months each
animal will need about l V2 tons of
hay.
The next question to be ans
wered is what kind of hay should
be bought? This depends on what is
available and the nutritional needs
of the animal. Mature brood cows
can get by during the fall and early
winter on rather poor to fair qual
ity roughage while first-calf heifers
need good quality forage to pro
vide for their own growing needs as
as well as the calf they are carrying.
As calving time nears, cows need to
be getting better feed than they
were during the early season. And
of course they need even more after
calving to provide adequate milk
supply.
Generally 13 of the hay should

their fears by complaining. For
many, the next step is numbing
these fears with drugs and alcohol.
Today's youth must cope with
issues adults didn't have to face as
children or teenagers.
Teen suicide, pregnancy and vio
lence are on the rise. One in five
children now live in a single-parent
household. They are the first young
generation to cope with out ability
to destroy the world with the push
of a button.
They have never known a world
without computers, videos or fast
foods. They live in a mobile, high
tech, fast-paced, immediate grati
fication society.

weedy hay and feeder quality alfalfa
if the nutritonal levels are balanced.
Ruminant animals such as cattle
are much easier to provide for in
terms of nutrition since they can
utilize several different forms and
kinds of feed. This isn't saying one
should not be concerned with pro
viding adequate feed but rather
that mature cattle can be fed some
poor quality feed if some other
good form is also available.
Providing 10 to 12 pounds of
alfalfa or other good hay and as
much grass straw or other poorer
hay will usually suffice for the
brood cow. Remember that grow
ing heifers will need to be separated
if possible and fed to meet their
greater needs.
Horses can be fed a good quality
grass hay to maintain their weight
and condition. If however, they are
being worked, then they will need a
little more feed. This might be
some grain or maybe good alfalfa

The caulking you've done inside

minimize the water vapor that gets
into your walls and ceiling. Be sure
to caulk plumbing penetrations and
install gaskets behind electric

Marriage requires work
As most couples discover, and as
numerous psychological studies
have shown, communication be

marriage. But does this mean the

One of the causes of the wnn-

press fabrics is over-drying. To
remove wrinkles, put items back
into the dryer. Set the control for
15-20 minutes on permanent press

reducing drying time and removing
items when there is still a trace of
