J w () Only the rough and ready need It was more than just "alive and welPfor the 38th annual All-Indian Tygh Valley rodeo, it was rip snorting, jumping, jabbing, stomp ing, alive and kicking for contest ants as well as for spectators. With a record number of 324 contest ants, the rodeo dispelled any thought that the rodeo was not doing well as rumors had reported earlier this year. A total of $18,534 was paid out in prize monies. A Washington cowboy, Shawn Best, placed a first on Saturday in the bareback and a third on Sun day for a second in the average. He tied with Donny Quintero for third and fourth in saddle bronc and won the bull riding with a score of 66, plus he participated in wild cow milking. It gave him enough to win the Ail-Around title and the saddle. Another Washington cowboy, Darin Brady, of Wapato was the high money winner with a first in team roping and a fifth in wild cow milking. I . .. promises plenty of action judged event to qualify. The trophy sponsored by the Wewa family. There will be jackets for all event winners and the Ail-Around Cowboy. The events include the Saddle bronc, bareback, bull riding, calf roping, team roping, steer wrest ling, sr. barrel racing, wild cow milking, wild horse race, jr. barrel race and calf riding. There will be a purse of $500.00 in each event except for the Jr. Barrel race and calf riding which the purse will be $75.00. The entry fee is $50.00 per event, with the bull riding open to the first 32 paid entries only. The entry fee is $50.00 per man, $100.00 per team in the team roping with two loops, and must enter as a team. The Wild Horse Race the entry fee is $90.00 per team for 16 teams. The Jr. Barrel Race entry fee $8.00 for 1 2 year old and under with the purse of $75.00. The Calf riding entry fee is $8.00 for 12 year old and under with the purse of $75.00. Tracksters qualify for state Todd McGuire is leading the Buff tracksters to the state cham pionship meet this weekend at the Mt. Hood Community College oval, with the meet starting Friday and concluding on Saturday. In district action the boys came out with a surprising second place behind Ontario who won the meet with a total of 127 points. The White Buffaloes edged out Nyssa 101-100 for second place. Todd McGuire was a double winner in the high jump with the height of 6 feet 4 inches. He stands among the top high jumpers in the state with the height of 6 feet, 8 inches. He won the long jump with the dis Girls win tennis title It was the doubles team of Teresa Simmons and June Commongore who powered their way past a Baker team who hadn't lost a set all season long. Craig leading Buff golfer Shauna Craig got a 87-82 for a 169 to lead the Madras Buffs at the OSAA-US Bank girls state golf tournament as the Buffs placed 13th. Madras White Buffaloes a A A school followed all AAA schools in the meet. Grants Pass won the meet with a score of 648, the Bend Lava Bears came in second with 670; Corvallis Benefit planned A benefit rodeo will be held Sat urday, May 30 at the Jefferson County rodeo grounds. Fifty per cent of entry fees will be taken out for Casey Olsen, infant son of David and Deanna Olsen, grand son or Ray and Millie Olsen of Olscn's Saddle Shop in Madras. The remaining monies will be jack potted for the planned events of the day. Casey was born with a congeni tal birth defect, a double esopha gus, earlier this year. Casey rnder went corrective surgery at the Oregon Health Sciences Hospital in Port land. Friends of the Olsen family are raising money to assist them with medical expenses since they had no medical insurance. In the running events who quali fied for the state meet by placing second were Todd Beamer in the 300 hurdles and Ron Blincoe in the 800. There were only two girls who placed and qualifed for the state meet they were Kelly Jividen who won the long jump at I5.7'j, which washer best jump for the year, and Ellen Blincoe placed second in the 400. Five of six entries advanced to the semi-finals as the girls won the District 7AA title with the score of 47 points which was well ahead of second place Baker who compiled 23 points. 694; South Eugene 700; Beaverton 714; Roseburg 726; Wilson 743; Sunset 755; South Salem 770; Lake ridge 775; Grant 781; North Bend 782 and Madras 789. At 3 p.m. team branding will be held with buckles going to the winners in the four man mixed team (two members must be women) and the tour man team. A rodeo will be held at 7 p.m. with events in calf roping, bare back, saddle bronc, bull riding, wild cow milking, team roping, barrel racing, call your dog, wild horse race and Jr. barrels. A western dance will start at 9 p.m. with music by County Line. A $5 donation per person will get the person in to watch all of the events planned for the entire day. Entries open on Tuesday, May 26 at 8 p.m. and close Wednesday. May 27 at 10 p.m. Post entries will be accepted but will be limited. All entries must be paid in cash.
