T heir cars blocking escape from JLittle Oitz Loop. I t was? still daylight. We were caught unaw are. I had the feeling.they did not know how ,to deabwith me. A sober grandm other, over fifty, at a party. N pt everyone was drinking. D ads, uncles, aunties, moms, brothers, sisters and cd-wOrkers we were all sharing our happy feeling's for the newlywed cou ple. O ur sirt, in the eyes of the police, was not containing the party in the couple’s home. But we were never told th at this overflow had caused a problem with the surrounding neighbors. W hen asked w hat the com- p lain W as, we were all “bawled o u t” for not fighting the Lower D ry Creek fire. And, we were told th a t the party was over, to get in our cars and leave. But,’ how.were we to leave; were we to go right through their police cars??? T w oyoung boys were loaded* in one police car. A nother, who had no car to go to, fw as taken down the hill and «shoved over the carhood, face dow n, by a police .officer apparently drunk oh his own power. T he young man was handcuffed and put in the police car. H egavenoresist- a n ce. . • * & A • - j , A nd now , up the hill again. .. People who had been drink ing resisted and shouted at the police. When one m other says her child is in a car and could she get her, one officer says, “No, go inside, its okay.” She goes. But, it js not okay. He turnS'Jand tells his superior? “T here is? a child over ip* the car,,” im p ly in g 'th at the child had been abandoned. The child is by now scared and crying. I told him, “Leave h er alone, she |s?td y grandchild. I had been getting watermelon for her when they cam e.” . Leaving me, the officer 1 think is the “ C aptain,” yells into an open window of the house, “ All older people will be taken for ^contributing alo n g w ith the* owner, if we do not stay inside the hbuse.” We still do n ’t knbw what the com plaint is. It was not my first experience of police being called to a party I attended, but we always knew what the com plaint was. And we were usually given a warning with courtesy. Also, if the peo ple could ndt control the party them- selves, then and only then, were “the police called and usually only two officers arrived. But I am told that this excessive abuse of private citizens is a com m on occurrence. As an observer of this year’s Jefferson C ounty Little League All-Star team, I feel really proud, th at my son was selected to be on this special team. This is but a little show of gratitude that I will show fo rrn y son’s summer accom plishments. M y real concern is that I have been around Little League and I do know th a t their is taflent ’ around Jefferson County that can com pete with other coun ties, but some of the cream from Jefferson Coupty never made it to the selections, and only a chosen few made it. G ranted, those who did play made a very respectable showing, As for me, I d id n ’t .-cherish the thought of our league Being used as a wel- come m at for everyone. The basis fo r the selection of both players and coaches needs to be upgraded! When any coach lets mistake . build u p o n mistake without the player being scolded o r shown fio)v to correct errors is the .biggest mistake of, all. T hen players can use this as a basis of “why should I try any, harder—they w on’t say any thing.” , I have very little respect if any for this year’s coaches, because in my own opinion A) no disci pline; and B) never, should have been there ip the first place. The m anager was one who co uldn’t even field a team for a game but had a position on the all-star coaching level. Is it this abuse of power th at opr children resist? H ow , are they treated in jail? Are they always treated with so little re spect? I’m told in w riting this I will only make things worse; that there will be reprisals. It will com e.back on us. H ad we re sisted, would Little Oitz Loop be burned dow n as the “ M ove” neighborhood in that eastern city? This is W arm Springs. L never thought we needed “ swat team ” tactics? O u r c h ild re n , o u r y o u n g people are our future. O ur chil? dren m ust be shown respect if they are to respect others and? the laws of our community. To the Editor, This letter is to thank the locaf people at W arm Springs for their participation and fel lowship in our tent revival. I . for th f donation of wood chips, and Jefferson C ounty School D istrict for the use of electricity, the Com m un- ity C enter and the Full Gospel Church for the use of their chairs. Special thanks to those who helped put u p the tent an<4 is supposed to be a program used to help our future players, but from w hat I saw it took all players<six; weeks orJpnger, to Je t som eone know th at they could play the gam eand-it took a 7 w hole J.df less time for the coaches to dem oralize them as individuals. As my thoughts are: they may be good at teaching some things but , baseball isn’t one of them. My kids learned more in the minors then what they were given during all-star practice. * My feelings are that the best should be playing with the best; and not because, of close ties! And coached by the best. I’ve been as, patient as long as I could, but this old habit is’ going to have to change! Even if it means for some people to step down and get out of Little League in order for the future players to benefit from the program . I ’ve seen ,a , bqnch of good players, literally quit because of being picked on or disrespectful to the coach. A coach has tp earn the players’ respect and not just expect it. I have few more choice words, but my critizing has’ to stop-—J I’m a person Who woif’t stand, for this to happen again. ? ; M y kids will participate in sports and I am very hesistant ,to let them play for either of these two people because I am a non-believer in ’'the,tactics used. — ■ ■ g g ® $ HB a i h i To the Editor, T h e Self-Defense?
