Cole Memorial It is a rodeo that offers som ething fo r everyone, according to sponsor Carrol “Shad” Shadley. The second annual Eddie “Mankins” Cole Memorial jackpot rodeo will be held at Shad and Jack’s arena in Madras on August 13 and 14. The arena is located two miles south of Madras on the old Culver highway. The rodeo is sponsored in memory of Cole who was well known to people of this area as a rodeo contestant and logger. Cole died in an automobile accident in 1982. He was known in rodeo circuits rodeo slated as a team roper and in his earlier rodeo career, as a bronc rider. The Shadley family planned a rodeo in which Cole himself would have enjoyed participating. Traditional rodeo events offered will be saddle bronc, bareback, calf roping, team roping, mixed team roping, barrel racing, girls’ cow riding, and wild horse race. Special features offered will be the watermelon race, a kid’s foot race, a fat man’s race and a fat women’s relay race. The rodeo books will open on Saturday, August 13 at 8 Fun run scheduled There is a fun run scheduled for August 6, sponsored by the Je ffe rso n C ounty Y outh Recreation Program and the Jefferson County Juvenile Services Commission. The registration will start at 7:30 a.m. and the run will get underway at 8 a.m. There is a one mile and a five mile run for all ages. The registration forms can be picked up at the Judges office in the Jefferson County Courthouse or at the Chamber of Commerce office at 158 Fifth Street. This is in conjunction with the Kids Day. A parade is scheduled for 10:15. All enterents should get lined up at 9:30 a.m. forjudging. Children of all ages are in v ite d to p a r t i c i p a t e , decorated bikes, pets, tricycles and what ever there is to decorate for a parade, the only thing is there should be no com m ericalized advertising done in the parade, there will be ribbons presented to all participants in the parade. Football clinic to be h eld A u g . 1 5 -1 9 A football clinic is set for August 15-19, for perspective junior high and high school boys who are interested in football. The clinic is for all 7-12 graders in the County who want to play football. There is a $25 registration fee which will be collected at the first session to cover insurance and for a jersey. It is advisable to make early arrangements to eliminate conflicts with other programs. T he c lin ic w ill o ffe r fundamentals in blocking, tackleing, passing, receving and kicking, each participant w ill r e c e iv e in d iv id u a l instructions in all aspects of the game. All five sessions will start at 9 a.m. and run until 12 boon. a.m. and close that same day at 12:30 p.m. All entry fees must be paid in cash. A stock fee of $2 per entry will be drawn from the fee. An “All-Around-’ Cowgirl” buckle and an “All- Around-Cowboy” buckle will be awarded. Showtime for each day is 1:30 p.m. A gate admission of $2 per person will j>e charged. On S u n d ay , A ugust 14, following the rodeo, a free bar- b-que will be held fo r s p e c t a t o r s a s w e ll a s contestants. For a weekend of fun and excitment, plan to attend the memorial rodeo. The Dalles American’s All- Stars won the Little League bseball tournament and the District 5 championship which was held in Redmond just recently and this advances them to the state play-offs’ while the Jefferson County All- Stars had to settle for fourth place. The Jefferson County boys were off to a good start by winning their opener over The Dalles Western team 8-4. But Dalles Western team 8-4, but than they ran into a bit of trouble in their second anbd third games first losing to Hermiston 4-3. The hitting was good during the game but the JC boys were unable to put more than three runs across the plate in a hard played game. In their third and final game Hood River took advantage of some bad play and scored two runs in the first inning and went on to hold off the Jefferson County boys bid for third place. The game was termed a pitchers duel Of Hood Rivers Jeff Mansure and Jefferson Countys Delton Trimble. The final score in favor of Hood River 2-1. The hitting was not all that bad, Trimble was three for three and others getting hits were Norman Wolfe, Muniz and Utter. Muniz was the only one to score the, lone run for Jefferson County. The Dalles Americans now advance to state play-offs in Portland. Co-ed slowpitch tourney set The second annual Seeksee- qua Animals Co-ed slowpitch softball tournament will be held on August 5,6 and 7 at the Warm Springs Community Center. The co-ed tournament is sponsored by the Animals softball team. All teams will consist of at least five men and five women. Each team must turn in a completed roster before the first game, no names can be added to the roster after the first game, a'limit of 15 names per team, names can appear on only one team roster and a team may start play with only nine players. Other rules applying to the tournament play are that all meh will bat with a 30-inch bat and will bat opposite (left-handers will bat rig h t-h an d e d ); a lte rn a tin g batting order of male and female; no stepping over the bases; two strikes and two fouls make an out; only head slides permitted, other slides make an out and the umpire’s word is final. A $ 100 entry fee must be paid before a team plays ball. All fees must be paid by cash or a cashiers check, no personal checks will be accepted. Trophies will be awarded for the top five places. Trophies willbe given for the “at-least- we-tried”team, sportsmanship, most valuable female'and male players, the oldest female and male players, and 24 all-star players a female and male chosen from each team).
