There was some good news and some bad news for the Jefferson County girls softball teams during the openers of tournament play as the major league teams played at Hood River and the senior girls were in Hermiston, on July 14,1983. First, the bad news is the that the Jefferson County major league team lost in the opening round to a strong Hood River team by the score of 16-2. Coach Julie Mitchell said, “we had to good opening innings, two bad ones and two good good final innings.” After two complete innings, the Jefferson County girls were holding 2»1 edge over their opponents and seemed to have everything under control but something went wrong in the third and fourth innings. The girls went into a slump and were unable to contain the determined Hood River team. Hood River took advantage of bad play and errors during that period and by the time the Jefferson County girls could pull themselves back together, Hood River had run ihe score up to 16-2. In the closing innings, the local gals got back in stride to contain Hood River but they were unable to get any kind of a rally going for themselves. After their loss in the first game, the best they can do is place third. However, one more loss and they will be out. The girls found out that all the chips are down a t tournament p!ay. , Lynn Tanewasha did the pitching for the Jefferson County girls. Other local girls who saw action were Christel Leonard, first base; Nellie Sam, left field; Elizabeth Histake, center field; and Marcy Stacona, left field. Meanwhile the senior girls were not to be denied a victory as they held on to top Hermiston 12-11 1 in a close, hard played game. 5 It was a good team effort by the Jefferson County girls said Fran Moses. “Everyone did an outstanding job,” she went on to say. M issie D avid did the pitching for the entire game and turned in one of her best performances of the year. Backing her . ,up with , some outstanding defensive play was Deannie Smith who played first base. Gaylene Adams did the catching while June Smith did a good job on third base and Jolene Smith handled the chores in left field. At press time the girls will be taking the field for their second game of the tourney against the winner of the Redmond- H ood R iver gam e. The opponent was unknown at press time. The double elim ination tournam ent will wind up Saturday and the champions will advance for further action in the State play-offs in Portland. Jackpot rodeo Aug. 13,14 The Jefferson County girl’s major legue aU-stars team lost their first game in tne opening round of district playoffs in Hermiston. N ot pictured are Marci Stacona, Denys White and Tana Sixkiller. The second annual Eddie “ M ankins” Cole memorial jackpot rodeo will be held at Shad and Jack’s arena in Madras on August 13 and 14. The arena is located two miles south of Madras on the Old Culver Highway. Rodeo books will open on Saturday, August 13 at 8 a.m. and close that same day at 12:30 p.m. Rodeo events featured will be saddle bronc, bareback, calf roping, team roping, mixed team roping, barrel race, girl’s cow riding, and wild horse race. Entry fees for each event are $20 except in team roping it will be $20 per man, mixed team roping is $ 10 per man and in the wild horse race, $20 per man. Added features will be a water melon race, kid’s foot race for 12 and under, a fat man’s race and a fat women’s relay race. All-Star team chosen The Jefferson County Little League ended the season with a tie for first, with the Madras Elks and W arm Springs Papooses both finishing the season with 9-1. The next order of business was to select the all- star coach and manager. Claude Smith, Sr. was elected as manager and Rick Utter, F ran k Sm ith and Frank Trim ble w'ere selected as coaches of the all-star team. The boys selected to play on the all-star team were chosen by the coaches. “Boys were chosen by their past record for the year with ah emphasis on batting average and errors,” according to coach'Rick Utter. The following boys were chosen for the all-star team: Tracy Graves, Victor Muniz, Bronson Utter, Jeff Hawes, Sonny Ball, Danny Ortiz, Curt Cosgrove, Anthony Chaves, Aaron Schneider from Madras team s; D orian Soliz and Wayne Miller from the Warm Springs Little Bucks team; and N o rm a n W o lfe, D e lto n Trimble, Cecil Governor and Gary Smith from the Warm Springs Papoose team. The all-star team will play at the District 6 play-offs in Redmond on July 20. For their first game, they will meet the all-star team from The Dalles. The winner of the district play offs will continue on to the State finals held in Portland in August. According to Claude Smith, “The team is looking real good.
