Page 8 March 25, Î983 Spilyay Tymoo Agency District Candidate Delano Miller My qualifications are: I received a degree from Oregon State University. I have been the director of the Community Center Recrea tion since 1974.1 have been an education committee member for six and Vi years and served as chairman for five years. I have been a LHS (HUD) board member for six years, a JOM committee member and a Title IV parent committee member. Though I am not well- versed in traditional Indian Culture, I feel the Tribe needs to stand behind their committment to culture. I support not only ongoing classes in our language, but also regular instruction to our people in Indian Arts and Crafts, songs, dances, legends, etc. Kah-Nee-Ta and the Hydro- Electric Plant. Two years ago we were introduced to a training plan of this type— but nothing seemed to become of it. Our recreation facilities need to be expanded both indoors (swimming pools, saunas, racquetball courts) and outdoors (youth c a m p , te n n is c o u r ts , neighborhood parks and playgrounds). I feel that we need to be training at least two of our own people in each of the Tribal Management posi tions, as well as manage ment positions with WSFPI, There needs to be more comm unication with the people. We have people representing the Tribe travel out-of-state everyday—but there is little or no feedback in f o r m a tio n g iv e n o r presented to the people (other than through the S p ily a y T y m o o ). -T h is in c lu d e s not o n ly the Council, but all depart ments. It seems that the closer we getto election, the more meetings we have. There are many other areas of Concerns to me; such as education, police, Kah-N ee-Ta, the trib a l budget, and timber, etc. I feel the areas I have mentioned are the concerns which affect a lot of those people who are unem ployed, uneducated, and young. Should I be elected, these are the.areas that I would try to make become a reality. My concern is not limited to the Agency, but includes the entire reservation. I would consider it ah honor and a privilege to be elected to serve my people and the Community as a tribal council member. I would do my very best to serve you well. Seekseequa District Candidates grandmother of many, I have much concern for the future of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. As a representative of the Seekseequa District, I feel once we learn to work together as a Confederated Tribe w ill we be truly efficient. lam Ellen Henry Johnson, a n o m in e e fo r T rib a l Council. As a mother of six, I feel the position of Tribal Council member is a very serious one. The decision making process is difficult when the decision involves so many people. As a Tribal Council member I would learn all I could about each subject concerned, evaluate all alternatives by weighing all the advantages and d is a d v a n ta g e s to o u r community as a whole, and make the best possible Relatives and friends of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs: I want to thank you for nominating me so that I may represent you on the Tribal Council. If I am elected, I will do my best for my people as well as all tribal members. When I was a young girl, I would sit and listen to our old people talk about what was going to take over our reservation in later years, such as the useless political promises we hear. That is what is happening now. A f t e r t h o s e c o u n c il meetings, the people would collect money to send one or two men to Washington, D.C. to do our talking for us. decision. My ability to speak what is on my mind and not sit back as a quiet by stander, would be a good asset to the people. Although I have lived a number of my years in Tygh V a lle y, I have alw ays considered Warm Springs my home and have never failed to vote. My exper ience includes serving as chairm an of the three fo llo w in g pro gram s: 1. CETA, 2. JOM and 3. Title IV. I am actively involved in many of the sports events at the Community Center. I have alw ays fe lt th a t sp orting a ctivitie s keep people healthy and con s tr u c t iv e r a th e r th a n destructive. I have managed our family basketball team for six years and our softball team for four years and have b ro u g h t hom e m any sportsmanship trophies. I get along well with other people and have done quite a bit of traveling, and traveling for me as a Tribal Council member would not be a problem. It is important that the W a rm S p r in g s t r i b a l members are involved in w hat goes on in this community and that they are kept informed. More district meetings should be held so that the people can speak of their concerns, so they are aware of upcoming events ^nd receive the in fo rm a tio n the T rib a l Council members receive in their travels and meetings. Although I’d appreciate y o u r v o te , th e m o s t important thing is that you do vote. Now they send many people and spend much money. I don’t believe in flying all over the United States. I think our place is right here on the reservation where our people need us. I have served on various committees. I served on the HUD housing committee without pay for 11 years. I also served on the Land use and Timber committees. My husband Wilfred and I have five children and we1 have raised nine other children, all boys, as well. I would like to encourage everyone to get out and v o te — th is is a v e ry important election. Karen Wallulatum I’m just completing my second term on Council.
