I serve the Tribes on the Kah-Nee-Ta Board of Directors, am a member of the Recreation Committee and a CETA b o a rd m e m b e r. W h ile involved with these duties, I have .always endeavored to help the Indian people, both on and off the reservation. I have developed a feeling for the basic concerns and problem s of the Indian people and w ill always strive to f in d a n s w e rs a n d solutions to their questions. Linton Winishut When you serve on the Council, about the time you get settled down, your term is up. If you’re not re elected, you’re more able to h e lp th e s u c c e e d in g candidate for his term. I’d like to see continuity in the m em bership o f the Council. One way to do this w o u ld be b y h a v in g staggered term expiration years. I believe very strongly that Indian people should run th e ir ow n g o v e rn m e n t. Presently, I am involved with the Employee Development department as a trainer. I fe e l th a t tr a in in g and education are very impor tant to our people. If J am elected, I would like to see o u r em ployees present their quaiifrcaitons for promotions and n o t rely on their political friends and relatives for advancement. The doors blocking the Indian people from ad v a n c e m e n t s h o u ld be knocked down. We have been made these promises year after year. It’s tim e it became a reality. E co no m ics is alw ays placed above comm unity concerns so that money seems more important than people. Although money is im p o r ta n t, o u t y o u n g people are our greatest natural resource. Over half of our population on this reservation is under 21 and, yet, less than sixty percent of the work force is tribal. I know some people w ill say th a t i t ’ s th e p e o p le s ’ r e s p o n s ib ilit y to fin d employment but what are we doing to create jobs for our younger generation who haven’t had a chance to prove themselves in our changing world? I plan to live here on the reservation fo r the rest of my life and w ant to try to make Warm Springs a better place to live fo r all of us. I would fe e l v e ry p ro u d a n d privileged to represent the Tribes in the very important years to come. Another thing is at-large voting. I would like to have a chance to vote for someone from Simnasho, to vote for someone from Agency, and to vote fo r someone from S e e k s e e q u a . It w o u ld eliminate districts I would like to see the Council work closer with the Simnashos, w ith th e p e o p le here (Agency) and w ith the people of the South End. In the next three years, we should utilize as many of our own people as possible where we now have non- Indians working. We have many people who are well- trained; yet, their training is being wasted. I am not prejudiced, but I do feel that I can work better if we sit down and ask, ‘How can we best do this?’ Well, i f it were a white man, I wouldn’t even ask him that. 7 Let’s do something for our young people. We recently went through real tough times because of the depressed econom y of the entire United States, mainly through the wood products ind ustry which supplies the major portion of the Tribes’ budget. I have seen many changes in the reservation over the past years. I have worked for the government for many years, now I would like to work fo r all my people as a councilman. I encourage everyone to get out and vote.
