With these readings taken at th e s a m e l o c a t i o n a t approximately the same time each year the water run-off is estimated. February’s figures show this year’s water content to be 18 percent above average. Readings are taken at five different locations on the reservation with elevations ranging from 4,000 to 5,000 feet. Racing Creek, Bald Peter, Beaver Creek, Lion’s Head and Whitewater Meadows provide good snow pack averages. Lions Head and Whitewater Meadows readings are taken aerially. The marker’s “are placed at a difficult to get at spot for a better idea” of the snow pack, according to Warm Springs water master Deepak Sehgal. Graphs are produced with the data enabling Sehgal to make water flow predictions. By the end of March the water flow can be pretty closely estimated in cubic feet of water per second flow rate. The 1981 estimate was within ten percent of the actual flow. The amount of predicted water is useful in making plans for the spring and summer months. In some years it may be necessary to anticipate a drought o rlo prepare for flood conditions. Fish runs can also be estimated. A high rate of flow would be good for fisheries. Chief Kalama has surgery Nick Kalama, Chief of the Paiutes, under went surgery at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend on February 9.
