SPILYAY TYMOO Page 10 September 10.1982 Buff’s win opener The Buffs are off to a good start by winning their opening football game 25-12, over the Bend Lava Bears, Friday night September 3. Troy Smith, the Madras fullback compiled a total of 130 yards and two touch downs to lead the Madras attack. Smith was very instrumental on defense and doing good blocking also. Brad Blackman, the buff running back had one of his best runs, a 70 yard scamper down the sideline, out running the Bend defenders for a touch down. The Madras defense played a sharp game all evening long stopping the Bend Lava Bears time after time. A couple crucial ones were when Bend drove down with in the 20 yard line but were unable to score. Going into the itnermission the Lava Bears were sporting à 12-7 lead, and things, were looking pretty much in their favor. In the second half the Lava Bears kicked to the Buffs and just two plays later Bend recovered a Madras fumble giving them good field position with-in. the 20 yard line, but the defense rose, once again and stopped them cold. The win was a boost for the Madras Buffs beating Bend. The season is earlvyet and there are some tough non league games to play before entering conference play. The momentum is there, the Buffs have thé material, this equid be a very interesting year. .
