HANDS ON— Keith Baker took a moment to try his hand at glassblowing. A nice way to spend a summer afternoon browsing and learning about art and its creators could be termed the theme o f the 4th annual Central Oregon Arts Festival. Artists from throughout Oregon set up tables to display their wares during the festival held at thcCommunity Center on August Featured at the festival was the“ Challenge” and it was accepted by the local people and they were not taken in because the people in this area know their “ Pepsi.” The “ Pepsi Challenge” was offered by the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company o f Bend to test taste buds of “ cola connoisseurs.” Artists and spectators spend the dav enjoying the summer sun. The displays for thefestival were set up in the front courtyard area of the Community Center. Various displays o f paintings, photographs, frybread, bead w ork, paper hats, ceremics, scrimshaw and glassblowing art filled the tables for the curious to view and buy. The artists were selling more than their artwork, they also sold to some o f the spectaors the idea of trying their hand at a new hobby. The glassblowing display also offered to the curious a chance to “ get their hands on” and create a piece o f artwork. The artwork of freelance photographer Chuck Bradwell o f Bend drew comments from local people with his picture o f the old Smith barn located on the Deschutes River. Bradwell said the lighting in the photo was unusual because he took it following the solar eclipse in February, 1979. It was a subject he had passedoften and the finished product explains his interest in the way o f a striking photograph Local artist Myrna Courtney displayed a selection, of colorful cloth colleges of geometric designed quilts and clothing lo r Barbie dolls. The annual event is sponsored by the Community Center as a summer event for the artists and the people o f Warm Springs.
