SPORTS Local boxers keep a busy schedule The Warm Springs boxing team traveled to the Inland Empire Junior and Senior G o ld e n G lo v e B o x in g Tournament held at Spokane, Washington February 21-22. A total of 264 boxers competed in three rings. There were 12 boxers in the 10-11 year old 65 pound division. Renolds Allen lost a decision to David Reidt of the Spokane Eagles boxing team. He just couldn’t get into the act, one of those bad days for Allen. Johnny James Sampson, in the special Sr. 139-pound class, stopped Scott Walker in the first round. Walker was boxing for Maries Elks of Canada. But then in the next bout Sampson lost to Trey Duren of the South Everett, W ashington boxing team. It was a very close bout. In the championship match Duren beat Gerald Peters from Alberta B.C., Canada. Tony Stacona moved up in weight class from 85 pounds to the 90-pound class. In his first bout he stopped Bret Taggart of Hamilton, Canada, in the first round with a good solid right hook. In his second bout Staco n a decisioned Ju stin Jenkins of Bonners Ferry, Idaho in a close bout. In the c h a m p io n s h ip b o u t he decisioned Wayne Hall from the Kootenai boxing club from Idaho. Boxing coach Gerald Smith said,HThis gave me a chance to see Tony in action, and even though he won the champion ship there are some areas that he definitely needs to work on. He needs work in those areas due to being rusty from not getting any bouts. All of this is a course of actions where we intend to prepare Tony for the Oregon Junior Olympics VIA O re g o n J u n i o r G o ld e n Gloves,” said Smith. This was the 60- pound class. In the 10-11 year- old 85-pound class Kanet W olfe of W arm Springs d e fe a te d C ecil G o v e n o r another local boy. 12-13 year old 85-pound .class Dean Todd of Seattle defeated Alvis Smith III of Warm Springs. The 14-15 year-old division was won by Tom Kipp of Seattle who defeated Guy Herkshan from Warm Springs. In the special senior 125-pound d iv is io n M u rry K a la m a defeated Ricky Sampson of Yakima. The special senior 132-pound Lawrence Caldera defeated Kyle Corpuz of Yakima. Open senior 132 pounder Don Hoptowit of Warm Springs was defeated by Rodney Totus of Granger, Washington. In the open senior 1 6 5 -p o u n d c la s s T o d d Danzuka of Warm Springs stopped Vaughn Yellow Wolfe of Yakima. Todd knocked him out in the first round. Root Feast Rodeo The annual R oot Feast Rodeo, sponsored by the Warm Springs rodeo associa tion, will be held on April 11- 12, starting at 1:30 p.m. daily. The admission is $3.50, $1.50 and the senior citizens Free. The events will include bareback, saddle bronc, team roping enter twice-two loops, calf roping. Barrel Race Sr., barrel race Junior (13 and Under), ribbon roping Jr. and Sr. (enter each day), and the wild horse race. The entry fee will be $30.00 in each event except barrel race J r (13 and under), ribbon roping Jr. and Sr. and the wild horse race. The books will be open from March 24 and will close April 8. Call 553-1385 from five p.m. to 10:00 p.m. only. There will be no checks accepted. Added attraction will be the All-Indian endurance race which is scheduled for the 11 th of April, to start to 10:00 a.m. at the park area. Attention: - Oregon State Livestock Control requires that AU horses participating in the rodeo have proof of Negative Coggins test for E quine Infectious Anemia (E.I.A.) Endurance race planned An Endurance Horse Race open to all will be held here at Warm Springs in April. An 18- 20 mile race is being planned for the same course which was held last year. The race starts and ends at “the Park”. Each rider must use a sto c k saddle and the entry fee is $50.00 per rider, 18 years or older. Watch for posters of the race date in the near future. Carl Tewee, in the 12-13 year- old 85 pound division was defeated by Todd Saldenbury of Kottenai, Idaho. Corey Scott, in the 10-11 year-old, 60-pound division was the champion. It was a w alk-through, uncontested match. His opponent, Chuck Harris of Kelso, Washington, became ill Saturday night. Harris was the 1981 Inland Em pire 60-pound Golden Glove champion in Sponkane, Washington. Kanet Wolfe was the runner- up in the 10-11 year old 80- pound class. He was defeated by Chester Clubb from The Dalles. In the 10-11 year-old, 90-pound class Tony Stacona was defeated by Wayne Hall from Kootenai, Idaho. Tony had defeated Wayne Hall in the c h a m p io n s h ip b o u t a t Spokane. Marvin Govenor was runner-up in the 12-13 year-old class at 106 pounds. He was defeated by Fred Clark, of Kelso, Washington. Kevin Blueback was runner- up in the 119 pound class as he was defeated by Jeff Miller of Kelso. In the 14-15 year- old, 125 pound division Guy Herkshan was defeated by Ernie Chevez of Douglas, Colorado. M urry Kalama, champion in the special senior division at 125 pounds defeated Mathew Cloyd of Vancouver, Washington. Coming up The next outing for the local boxers will be March 21-22 here in Warm Springs at the C om m unity C en ter. T he alternative to work hours with Saturday with eliminations at 7:00 p.m.. On Sunday the championship bouts will begin at 11 a.m.. There will be boxers from Canada, Washington, Idaho, Northern California, Nevada and Oregon. Women’s pool league update There are 22 women’s pool teams that compete each Thursday night throughout the Central Oregon area. The teams come from Redmond, Prineville and Madras. There are six teams from the Madras area which have local girls on the team. One of the teams. Porterhouse No. 1, is sitting in second place with a 280 win 193 loss record. Team members include Lois Selam, Muriel Yeo, Alice Knight, Linda Brown and Hazel Woods. Meet Market No. 1, is in third place and the team co n sists of Ja c k ie Simtustus, Jeri Smith, Marie Smith, Marcie Simtustus and Pat Tanewasha. Rialto No. 2, is in 8th place with team members Vicki Rosas, Bernie Tufti, Angie Boise, Bonnie Tuckta and Teeny Tappo. Meet Market No. 2 is in 10th place and the team members are Noree Langley, Bonnie C harley, Stella Langley, Dora Goudy and Celeste Whitewolfe, Rialto No. 1 is in 13th place with locals of Wilma Scott, Diane Miller, Leta Smith, Georgie Mercale and Lillian Smith. Porter House No. 2 is in 19th place with team members of Lori Smith, Joyce Ortiz, Winnie Miller, Lydia Crane and Vernite Harvey.
