One explanation of its existence says that there are steep hills in Oklahoma where one day Geronimo with the army in hot pursuit made a leep on horseback down an almost virtical cliff," a feat that the possee could not duplicate. The legend states that in the jmidst of his jump to freedome he gave the blook curdling cry of “Geronimo-o-!” Hello. The earliest ancestor of hello is the English hallow with the accent on the second syllable. By the nineteenth century people were pronoun- -cing it hullo. Edison, inventor of the telephone, is said to have started hello as we know it today over the telephone and it came into widespread use.
