fa Page 8 March 21,1980 Tribal Council Candidates—Simnasho I have always felt I could do an adequate job if I had more time on the Tribal Council. I think it is important to keep the people currently posted on all matters relating to the Tribes, and it has always been my policy to offer clean and honest government. Since every outgoing Tribal C ouncil leaves unfinished tasks, it will be necessary to review where that Tribal Council left off. I recommend a complete review of all actions taken by the outgoing Council before implementation of any plans. If elected, I would like to stabilize the activity of the Tribal Council. Sometimes new Tribal Councils move too fast w ith o u t giving due consideration to the needs of our people. My record should speak for itself on matters of interest to the people. Ill always try to do things the right way with our people. I would like to see brought back the “Candidates Night Out” where the people could see the candidates face-to-face and be able to shoot questions at them. All candidates for that for our future generations. Our council must fight for our peoples, rights on all political issues and proposals, it’s a matter of survival for all our Indian people here at Warm Springs. We are all born as human people into this life and this has to be truth in our selves. Our people is that source of our councilmen’s strength and are recognized leaders for our Indian people. I feel as a useful person to represent my Indian people and it’s a great honor to be once again nominated as a I first became involved with tribal politics when I was asked by Council to serve on the Fish and Wildlife committee. Olney Patt, Sr. Tribal Council should have a time to fully expose themselves to our people rather than just putting our plans in the paper. We really should do both. Overall, it’s a great honor to be a candidate running against the best. It’s a greater honer to be elected to the Tribal Council, and it’s as great an honor to be defeated by the best. candidate 4or one of your councilmen, but it would be greater to be elected as one, yes! 1 do agree that our tribal council should be honest and alert at all time’s and in order to do that you have to have a sober mind, after all, too much booze don’t mix with any business, that I admire the fact I ask you my Indian people to judge not ones past, but let us judge together our future for good tribal government that we can all benefit by and doing th a t we can keep o u r great Warm Springs reserva tion in tact like it is today. Off and on I’ve been trying to participate in disrict meetings and some of the local affairs. I guess one reason (for running) is to be an asset of the tribes and for the tribes. And because of my interest in the re se rv a tio n and fo r the reservation, I hope to learn a little bit more. Elders say, the younger committeeman and council man, if they ever want to learn anything, they will have to be there in that place to learn. Even if we don’t say anything, we’re still yet there, listening Phillip David and learning. because of the amount of work It’s like going in there and trying to do for the present trying to maintain the quality I’m and Wildlife committee. o f th e C o u n c il t h a t ’s Fish I have a wife and three girls established. I’ll try to maintain that quality for the benefit of (g ra d e schoo l age) and although we are renting in The the tribes. I’m not a full-time employee. Dalles, it is only a temporary The reason I’m not working is situation. which is very beneficial to all of us. The important thing is to work hard for our people as a group and above all, be fair in every respect. In conclusion, 1 must say that the fact that our beloved older Indian people, even th o u g h u n e d u c a te d h ad determination to aquire what we have today. With good intelligent leadership We can Delbert Frank, Sr. continue ahead. So take advantage of your U navailable for com m ent right to vote, for the candidate, who you think will do the most good for everything concerned. I will represent the Simnasho district the best possible way. I always try to represent them well. I served on the council for 13 years before and now I am a member of the Fish and W ildlife C o m m ittee, the Museum Committee and I was appointed to serve on the task force committee to review the committee structure. One of my main interests for the 80’s is natural resource. I feel the fishery resources people Harold Culpus need to work with the energy and water resources people to have all sides of the story. Everyone should agree to have m u ltip le use o f w a te r. Negotiate with all people who work with water to have input with management people. As long as their is no agreement, the fisheries will not be enhanced. I feel that regular attendance of council meetings is very important. A person can miss a lot if he doesn’t attend meetings regularly. 1980 Seekseequa Council Candidates Some people feel that they need a change and 1 think 1 can provide that. I can see the concerns of Seekseequa as well as the concerns of all the people. Currently, I am chairman of the credit committee. I was on the Tribal Council ten years ago for two years. I have been in th e c o n stru c tio n and maintenance department for fifteen years as a heavy equipment operator and labor foreman. If elected to Tribal Council I’m interested in developing a program to develop good public relations. Good public relations would be a major stepping stone. It is necessary that people off the reservation learn about Indian culture and life. I don’t like having Indian people stereotyped. My special concerns for my district are a range develop ment program for cultivation of experimental grasses. I also want to see telephones in S eek seeq u a. I feel t h a t telephones can help the development of the area. Buddy Kalama My general concerns for the reservation are finances and irrigation. Our finances are being used too fast. If we don’t slow down we won't be able to have such good fortune in the future. The public feels that Tribal Council is spending too much money. I would like to see an irrig atio n project developed on the reservation. These are my concerns for Warm Springs. , . I feel that many people are behind me. I can offer better representation for our district and for the people. I fetl that I am respected and able to lead. I talk to a lot of people and I know how they feel. It is my desire to do what the people want. Many people want the government on the reservation to go back before the people. To do this they must be informed on all issues and given time before any decisions are made to discuss the issues and present their opinions. The vote, then, should be put before the people or before the council after the people have had the time and enough information to look at the issue. I believe th a t if y o u m ak e th is information available for the people the m ajority will become involved in decision making and they will stay involved. I have a concern for education. It isn’t good for kids to be dropping out of school. They need to learn and to understand what’s going on; to know why certain decisions on the reservation are being made; to be able to become involved. Orin Johnson U navailable for com m ent Wilson Wewa Jr. There is a need, also, lor a better justice system. I don’t feel it is working as it is, now. And, the physical facility is given too much space. Tradition is of importance as is growth. The reservation is growing but people are not having eno u g h tim e fo r adjustment. We should study this in Tribal Council. Karen Wallulatum U navailable for com m ent
