Using two tow trucks, the 1979 Trans Am is lifted to the top of the bridge (top right) and later, hauled to Ira’s wrecking yard in Madras. The car was totaled (bottom right) and police determined that the driver apparently fell asleep. Spilyay Tymoo photos by Stwyer A 28-year old M adras woman who apparently fell asleep November 11 while driving tow ard P o rtlan d , plummetted down a 250 foot gorge after striking the south edge of Mill Creek bridge then crashed through a guardrail. The victim was identified as Linda K. Smith, 28, of Madras. Tribal police discovered the wreck at about 6:50 a.m. when a car door and exhaust pipe were found at the end of the bridge. Police estimate Smith wrecked between 6-6:30 a.m. In a four hour process using a tow truck, the body was brought up, then the car, which was a 1979 Trans Am. P o lic e ru le d o u t the possiblity of suicide, noting that if she did committ suicide, she would have gone straight over and missed the bridge entirely. View Nursing Home Bazaar on December 9. Bazaar hours will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds from the event will be used to enrich the nursing hom e’s activity fund for resident trips and outings. Last year’s bazaar earnings were used for a four-day trip to the beach for those who were able to travel. Donations of sale items from Warm Springs people will be more than welcome. Also, the nursing home is always looking for volunteers to read and visit with the old people. The volunteers would not be involved in physical care, but an hour every now and then during the recreation time would be appreciated by the residents. Tribal members living at the nursing home are Ella Wolfe, Sims Holloquilla, Ruby Coon and Wilson Sam. Mt. View Nursing Home is located at 12th and A street in Madras, next to the hospital. Charles Jack, 31, both of W arm Springs, appeared before U.S. Magistrate George Juba Friday morning and both entered pleas of not guilty in different incidents. Badroad was charged with the second-degree nurder of Nelson McKinley^ 28, who died of a gunshot wound August 31. If found guilty, Badroad can spend up to life in prison. Charles Jack was charged with assault causing bodily injury to Edward Spino Jr. and a broken arm after being struck with a baseball bat. The offense carries up to 10 years in prison. Badroad and Jack were appointed lawyers from the public defender’s office and both were released on their own recognizance awaiting trial. Trial dates will be set Wednesday, November 21. U.S. Attorney Bill Youngman anticipates the trials to be set for late December or early January. Death under investigation- The Sunday evening gunshot death of Robert K. Tanewasha, 16. is being investigated by the F B I. Tanewasha and three others were elk hunting near Blue Lake when he was shot at about 6 p.m. A 15-year old non-tribal member was questioned and released. An autopsy done Tuesday by Dr. William Brady, state medical examiner, revealed that Tanewasha died of a gunshot wound to the head. He was shot once in the face with a small caliber high-powered gun. reported Brady. The son of Pat and Lester Tanewasha. Robert was a sophomore at Madras High School. His funeral was Thursday. November 15.
