Spllyay Tymoo July 27,1979 Pag« 7 Employees swelter at fourth annual picnic With the temperature hovering at the 108 degree mark, nobody at the employee picnic July 19 had to worry about their food getting cold." And understandably, many an appetite had already been dulled by the heat. But the prospect of dinner outdoors probably sounded appealing to those who would otherwise have been standing over a hot stove that evening. Most of the picnickers, who numbered about 300, sought refuge from the sun under a long canvas shelter stretched like an umbrella above benches and tables. For those who braved the heat, the reward was a delectible dinner of baked salmon donated by the Tribal Council and cooked by Lavina Tanewasha. Punch and pop were popular items this year and so was the watermelon. “But too many people brought baked beans,” said Mark Massey, noting that lots were left over. Miss Warm Springs, Sally Rhoan, started the evening off with the Lord’s Prayer in sign language while Kah-Nee-Ta social director Andy Lucas sang. But it was not long before Miss Warm Springs was out of her beaded buckskin dress and into a cooler outfit. Kids who had managed to stay clean through dinner gave in to reckless abandon during the first of the games, the egg toss. One young fellow wound up with raw egg all over his face after a particularly well- calculated “toss” from the girls team. Eggs splattered and broke everywhere. The girls emerged victorious amid the hilarity, being the possessors of the last whole egg—the one with the tough shell. The less-frenzied adult egg toss was won by Superinten dent Jim Cornett and Juvenile il® Judge Hamilton Greeley. In a come-from-behind effort, Dr. Steve Machtinger and his wife Karen captured first place in the three-legged race. The other racers jokingly explained that they were eithei overcome by the heat or were running on full stomachs. Mike and Tonia Polk teamed up tc take first place in the 9-10 yeai category. In another open race. Lowell Thompson and Bernadine Anderson stepped all over each other’s toes or their way to the finish line and victory. As the evening shadows grew long and last-minute raffle tickets were purchased, the much anticipated drawing began. While Jennifer munched on a wedge, Marie and Tobi Smith and her grandmother Mary Danzuka enjoyed their salmon dinners and fried bread. Raffle tickets in his shirt pocket, Kah-Nee-Ta social director Andy Lucas slurped up a juicy slice of watermelon before getting the games underway (center right). Cold drinks and punch were popular in the 108 degree heat (bottom right) and people lined up for fluids several times throughout the evening. Despite the heat, people were in the mood for games (lower left). Dr. Steve Machtinger was literally dragged across the line by his wife Karen who was determined to win the three-legged race. It was a true come-from-behind effort. Other frivolities that evening included an egg-toss, yo-yo contests and volleyball. Klls g#
