...but people find ways to adapt As the mercury climbed to 108 degrees for the third day in a row last week, Shitike Creek became the most popular spot in town. All ages congregated in the cool waters of the swimming hole, some displaying a great deal of energy and enthusiasm. But Jennifer Wolfe and Vi Martinez (above) were content just to plunk a chair into the water and let-the ripples lap up against their bodies. Taylor Arthur spent much of the afternoon hauling his two charges (left) upstream and letting them drift downstream again until the rope grew taut. Shitike Creek was also a good place to just stand around and visit, as many discovered. Appearing unaffected by the heat, two scantily-clad infants (center left) spent an evening watching adults swelter at the July 19 employee picnic. The babies are Melissa Knight daughter of Francis and Mona Knight, and Wamblee Wallulatum, son of Fred and Debbie Wallulatum. So what is the guy in the lower left photo doing, you ask? That is Shag (Lloyd Smith, Jr.) who had the unfortunate job of cleaning out the boiler at the mill. Intense heat from the boiler, where waste is burned for power, caused the temperature in the powerhouse to rise above 120 degrees Tuesday. Three times a day, Shag bundles up against the searing heat and scrapes coals out onto the floor with long, heavy tools. He then douses the embers with water, creating an unwelcome sauna-like atmosphere. No doubt, he probably felt like taking a flying leap into the Shitike swimming hole. Photos by Spilyay Tymoo Staff
