Ted Barney and Everett Miller These photos were taken as the runners were nearing the top of the Simnasho grade just past the 2 mile mark after the start from Simnasho to Kahneeta on their 14.5 mile run. There were ap proximately 120 eager runners Girls Place Second Boys Lose Out The Warm springs Teen Club boys and girls basketball teams hosted eight boys and eight girls team sfrom throughout the Northwest in and 18-and-under All-Indian tournament held March 9-11 at the Community Center. Wellpinit,. Washington won the girls championship beating Warm Springs, 54-43. Wellpinit dominated the three-day tourney led by Carla Daminio. Daminio was named “Most Valuable Player”, “high Scorer”, and was named to the all-star team. Daminio scored 73 points in three games to lead all scorers. Well pinit advanced to the champion ship game by defeating first Lapwai, 49-39 then Pendleton, 53-37. Warm Springs beat the Wapato Wolverines, 53-33, and Lapwai, 42-15 to advance to the championship game. The Warm Springs Teen club started the tournament with a win over Omak 62-47. The second game dropped to White Swan, 89-54, who went on to win the boys championship. In consola tion action they dropped another game to Wellpinit, 90-55. A new team in Warm Springs, - coached by Sammy Colwash, entered the tourna ment with no experience of any kind. They lost their first game 112-45 to White Swan, and lost their second game 66-35 to drop out of tournament action. RESULTS (boys) 1st - White Swan 2nd - Pendleton 3rd - Lapwai 4th - Wellpinit RESULTS (girls) 1st - Wellpinit 2nd - Warm Springs Teen Club 3rd Pendleton 4th Chemawa Both Pendleton boys and girls team took home the Sports manship award. Miss Rebound and Most Inspirational Player of the girls tourney was Chrissie Schaeffer, Wellpinit. Miss Hustle award went to Kimiko Danzuka, Warm Springs. Vic Sohappy, Pendleton, was named “Most Valuable Player”, “High Scorer”, “Mister Re bound, and “Most Inspirational,” of the tourney. Jake Frank, Warm Springs was Mister Hustle. ALL STARS Top five all-stars (most votes) received beaded belt buckles and the other five re ceived trophies. Receiving belt buckles were: Austin Greene, Warm springs; Vic Sohappy, Pendleton; Bill Flett, Wellpinit; Rick Ramsey, Lapwai; and Sid Owens, White Swan. Receiving tropies were Zeke Best, Omak; Buck Jones, Pendleton; Dave Wyncoop, Wellpinit; Alvin Spot ted Eagle, Chemawa; and Del mar Whitefoot, White Swan. Girls receiving belt buckles were Kimiko Danzuka, Warm Springs; Chrissie Schaeffer, Wellpinit, Carla Daminio, Well pinit; Jackie Flett, Wellpinit; and Pauline Boneshirt, Chema wa. Receiving trophies were Deannie Johnson, Warm Springs; Stevie Minthorn, Pen dleton; Vivian Sohappy, Pendle ton; Becky Broncheau, Lapwai; and Lisa Someck, Lapwai. Raffle Tickets on Sale August might seem like a long way off but don’t miss your chance to win one of the many prizes to be raffled in August by Ten-Bar Rodeo company and Associates. The raffle, will be held at the He-He Rodeo grounds during the Huckleberry feast on August 12. . A microwave oven, a ten speed bike, smoked buckskins, a gallon of huckleberries and ten concert tickets are the items to be raffled. Tickets are $1.00 each or six for $5.00 and can be purchased from Lois Estimo or Vesta Johnson. entered in what is believed to become an annual event here in Warm Springs. Many of the local entrants were experiencing their first grueling marathon run are planning to compete again next year. SPILYAY TYMOO PHOTO SPORTS Root Feast Rodeo Date Finalized The Warm Springs Rodeo Association has set the Annual Root Feast Rodeo for April 14 and 15 beginning at 1:00 p.m. both days at the Warm Springs Rodeo Grounds. Events include Bareback bronc riding, Saddle bronc rid ing, Bull Riding, Team Roping, Calf roping, and girls barrel racing. The events have a $35 entry fee with a $100 added purse. A $5 stock fee will be charged. Bull riding is limited to the first 30 paid entries so the association urges entries to be sent as soon as possible. The Wild Horse Race has a purse of $100, winner-take-all, with a $35.00 entry fee per team. The bulls are being provided by Sombrero Rodeo from Sisters, Billy Walker is providing the roping steers and the Simnasho Rough riders are providing the bucking horses. Novice Jr. Bar rel racing and novice cow riding (14 and under) have a $12.50 entry fee with no added purse. Silver buckles will be award ed in each event to first place winners and an all-around buckle will be given to the top money winner two or more events. Entries can be sent to: Warm Springs Rodeo Associa tion, Warm Springs, Oregon, 97761, or through the Madras Western Union. Books close at 11:00a.m. April 14. Buffs Win First Round In the first round of the State AA basketball tournament Mad ras won over Clatskanie 53-51 in a game that could’ve gone either way. Getting a slow start, the White Buffaloes were behind 18-10 after the first quarter. It wasn’t until 6-3 Bruce Olson ran into foul trouble and was pulled out of the game with three fouls in the first quarter that Madras slowly started pulling them selves together. Clatskanie’s full-court-press and fast-breaks in the first quarter made Buff players uneasy and accounted for missed shots. The boards were dominated by Clatskanie which pulled down the rebounds, then scored on the fast-breaks. In the second quarter it was the Tiger’s turn to be cold. Within the first two minutes of action Madras was only one point behind. With 5:27 left on the clock the Tigers called time-out with the score at 18-17. Madras led only once in the first half, 25-24, and the half-time score was 28-25, Clakskanie. The second half the Buffs came back, led by Mike Fiala who scored 13 points in the second half. Ron Wilson missed shot after shot. With 59 seconds left in the game, Clatskanie called time-out with Madras ahead 53-51. Clats kanie apparently tried to stall for time to hopefully put the game into overtime. But they got over-exited and, with five sec onds left on the clock, threw the ball out-of-bounds to clinch the At the State AA Boy’s Basketball Tournament at Engene McArthur game for Madras.
