PAGE 10, JANUARY 8, 1979 Wilkinson Named To Pro Golf Team Kah-Nee-Ta’s Golf Pro Jim Wilkinson has been named to this year’s Oregon Journal 1978 golf team. Wilkinson is one of six named to the pro set. Jim has had a very good year in the game. One of his major accom plishments was winning the Ore gon P.G.A. tournament and has participated in several tourna ments during the year. Wilkinson, in his seventh year as Kah-Nee-Ta’s golf pro, is one of six to be named to the pro set. He joins Milne who was selected as the Captain of the team, also McRae, Haney, I Duden and Griswold. Spilyay Photo by Roger Stwyer Vermillion Upsets Colville in Holiday Tourney The Great Plains Indians from Vermillion, S.D. defeated defending champions, the Col ville Tribe from Nespelem, Wash., 91-82, to win the champ ionship title of the 20th Annual Warm Springs Nation’s All Indian Holiday basketball tour nament held Dec. 27-30. Lacking the height that Vermillion has, the Colville Tribe was already behind after the first quarter. The score was 19-7. The second quarter showed Colville getting the upper hand, scoring 26 points to Vermillion’s 23. But the evenly-matched quar ter ended with Colville still behind, 42-33. In the third period, Vermil lion showed its dominance in rebounding and also displayed their checking ability. The taller South Dakota team was seen constantly checking their oppo nents as Colville couldn’t get anywhere in this quarter. The .Vermillion defense held Colville to only 13 points, while they scored 32. At the beginning of the fourth and final quarter, the score was 74-46. A chance for their second championship title in a row looked dim for Colville. But they never gave up until the buzzer went off. Colville rallied time after time and the standing room-only crowd thought that Colville was going to make a comeback. But despite Colville outscoring Vermillion 36-17, they were still behind by nine points when the game ended. Pete Conway, 6’4” forward for Vermillion, was leading scor er in the championship game with 26 points. With a few seconds left in the game, Conway made a one-handed slam-dunk. Conway was named Most Valu able Player of the tourney and also had the most rebounds. Each team member of the Great Plains Indians was award ed with a jacket. All-stars from the Vermillion team included: Conway, Bill Eaglestaff, Darrel Talks About, and Pete Davis. All-Stars from the second place team, Colville, were: Mike Jordan, Gary George, and Norris Palameteer. Other all-stars were: Lyle Akkerman and Cub Allenwood from the Nez Perce Nation; Byron In The Woods and Dan Mosley from the Oakland Bucks; and Al Doublerunner from the Satus Cowboys. High scorer of the tourna ment on an average of four games went to Byron In The Woods from Oakland. He aver aged 33 points per game. Cub Allenwood from the Nez Perce Nation had the most assists. It was not known how much he had at press time. Mr. Hustle award went to Pete McCormack of the Nez Perce Nation. The Sportsmanship award went to the Satus Cowboys. All-Stars and other awards winners were given trophies. Sixteen men teams and seven women teams gathered at Pelton Lanes in Madras, Dec. 30 through January 1, for the annual Warm Springs Holiday Bowling Tournament sanctioned by ABC-WIBC and sponsored by the Warm Springs Athletic Asso ciation; MEN TEAM WINNERS The “Hot Burgers” (Rudy Clements, Wilfred Jim, Vernon Tanewasha, John Wright) rolled their way to a first place in this division. They were awarded $200, team trophy, and four in dividual trophies. Placing second was Portland (Richard Fairbanks, Mel Miles, Robert Jackson, John Wright). They split $160 and took home the second place trophy. “The Crummies” (Eugene Greene, Ray Shike, Gerald Nico demus, Dick Souers) won third place and $120 for their efforts. WOMEN TEAM WINNERS Macy’s won first in this team event. Shirley Sanders, Libby Reese, Teddy Tanewasha, and Barbara Yaw, teamed up to win $160, team trophy, and four in dividual trophies. “Three Stooges plus 1” plac ed second and earned $100 and a team trophy. Pat Berry, Doris Wolfe, Norma Smith, and Linda Bagley made up this team. “Madhouse Gang” (Aradon- na Seyler, Darla Waldorf, Phyl lis Harrington, Deanna Shadley) placed third and won $80. MENS DOUBLES - DIVISION I First place went to Rudy Clements and John Wright. Their score was 1278 and they won $60 and two individual trophies. Scoring 1252 and taking sec ond place was Larry Langley and Alfred Smith, Jr. They won $50 and two individual trophies. Third place went to Richard Nelson and Phil Nelson, Jr. They won $30. MENS DOUBLES - DIVISION II Claude Smith teamed up with Jerry Sampson to roll a 1211 and win first place. They were given $60 and two individual trophies as a result of their win. Second place, went to Rudy Clements and Ralph Minnick. They took home $50 and two in dividual trophies. Everett Miller and George Clements doubled up to win third place and $30. WOMENS DOUBLES - DIV. I First place in this division went to Teddy Tanewasha and Barbara Yaw. They won $50 and were both given trophies. Norene Greene and Anna Clements won second and were awarded with $40 and two in dividual trophies. Helena Jones and Charlotte Shike won third place and $30. WOMENS DOUBLES - DIV. II Deanna Shadley and Libby Reese won first place and were given $50 and two trophies. Taking second were Teddy Tanewasha and Libby Reese. They won $40 and were also given two trophies. Third place went to Aradon- na Seyler and Darla Waldorf. They won $30. MENS SINGLES - DIVISION I Ray Shike rolled a 665 to win first place and was given $60 and a trophy. Second place went to Dick Souers for his 652 and he was awarded $45 and a trophy. Alfred Smith scored 648 to take third and win $30. Fourth place went to Bob Jackson who rolled 641 and he won $20. MENS SINGLES - DIVISION II Wallace Smartlowit won $60 and a trophy to win first place. Second place went to Richard Fairbanks who won $45 and a trophy. Glen Crain and Lyle Rhoan won $30 and $20 respec tively for third and fourth. Scores of this division were un known. WOMENS SINGLES - DIV. I Barb Yaw rolled a 600, good enough to win first place and take home $50 and a trophy. Marie Miles won second place and $35 and a trophy for her score of 588. For her 583, Anna I Clements won third place and I $25. Helena Jones scored 538 and I $20 to round the Division I sec- I tion. WOMENS SINGLES - DIV. II Barb Wright scored a 619 to I win first place. Deanna Shadley I won second for her score of 608. I Dee Parker and Linda Bagley I scored 604 and 602 respectively to I win third and fourth. They were awarded the same prize as Womens Singles Division I. MIXED DOUBLES First place went to Barbara Yaw and Larry Langley for their combined score of 1376. They won $70 and two trophies. Dick Souers doubled up with Nancy Cochran to score a 1314 and win $50 and two trophies. Rudy and Anna Clements won fourth place and $40 for their score of 1275. Jack Langley and Linda Langley scored 1243 and were awarded $30. John Wright won the Holiday Champ roll-off in the Division I class. He beat Mel Miles 224 to 146. Third place went to Alfred Smith, Jr., and Ray Shike took fourth. In the Division II Holiday Champ roll-off, Claude Smith came up champion. Everett Mil ler took second with Lyle Rhoan winning third. For the womens Holiday roll off, it was Marie Miles winning over Barbara Yaw in Division I. For Division II it was Deanna Shadley over Orthelia Miller 129 to 125. Linda Bagley won third. RAFFLE WINNERS Big winner in the raffle drawing was Ralph Minnick who won a beaded belt buckle. The belt buckle was donated by the VanPelt children in memory of their father. Winner of the Beaded purse, donated by Eugene and Norene Greene was Teddy Tanewasha. Hiram Smith won the Afghan which was donated by Barbara Yaw.
