This week grades will be turned in by teachers and will be ready for Parent Conference Day November 9, 1978. Each parent is encouraged to come to the schools, and spend ten min utes with each teacher pick up report cards, also, stop by and meet the Indian counselor. Any one who does not own a car and would like to attend Parent Conference Day please let me know. We’ll try to provide trans portation with the Community Liaison. FOR STUDENTS FAILING any classes and wishing to drop the course, here is some advise. Do not drop a course simply because you are failing. There are still nine weeks in which to improve your grade. It means extra effort must be exerted to achieve success, but don’t just give up. Please discuss the m atter first with your teacher, then with your counse lor. There was this guy who taught the Indians to read and speak English. The guys name was Columbus. He told the Indians that he thought he was the first to set foot on the continent because the first time he came, there was no sign of life. The Indians said that they couldn’t believe him, Columbus asked why? The Indians said that since he taught them how to read and write they said that an old chief left a lantern that was found with the inscriptions on the bottom 1392, and only God knows how long it was there. Columbus said, “If I take a hundred year’s off of my story how much would you take off?” YIKES SS SS SS Years ago there was this great warrior that always stopped at his friends camp to have some Luk-A-Meen. One day the guy sees the great warrior approaching and he looked tired and hungry. He prepares a bowl of Luk-A-Meen and places it in front of the warrior. The warrior just sat there and looked at the meal. This disturbed the guy so he asks, “Whats wrong, is it too hot, or too cold? The warrior said, “You try it.” the guy looks around and said. “There’s no spoon.” “Ah Ha,” replied the warrior. YIKES SS SS SS If people today think that there are no morenew frontiers, just watch a boy ring the bell on the front door on his first date. Things are really tough. YIKES SS SS SS You know that there are several kinds of ’’Colas” on the market today. For instance, there’s the famous Coca Cola, Royal Crown Cola, Shasta Cola, Pepsi Cola and Milk. “Milk is the Utter Cola.” YIKES SS SS SS There was this guy being interviewed by a couple of guys from the local TV station. One had a tape recorder and the other a TV camera. The guy being interviewed was standing there with a great big hole in the seat of his pants. Hopefully, in the future another dance will be held for all to enjoy. - I WANT TO INFORM the parents that I purchased a car for the purpose of visiting parents after school, around supper time. I would like to visit on a very informal basis so you will get to know me as someone who will be of assistance to you. Let’s talk about general con cerns and specifics related to your child here at Madras Senior High. What programs and activi ties are available to your child? How can you be involved with his school life? Parents’ input and involvement is needed!! THE UPCOMING UNITED INDIAN EDUCATION CON FERENCE at Portland, Novem ber 7,1978 is on everyone’s mind. The high school students who attend are being asked to enter tain at the Tuesday evening banquet. Due to limited space, it seems impossible to take more than eleven students. I would ask any Education Committee mem bers who wish to take students to the conference, please do so. Remember the conference is designed to inform, inspire, and motivate students. All students should be able to attend regard less of their current academic status. Hopefully, enrichment trips will stimulate the student to become more successful in school. I APPRECIATE VERY MUCH the time and effort parents take to visit me at school. It is an indication to me that.they care for their child. Yet, I understand parents work and cannot take the time off to visit, so, let’s work something out. Whenever you feel the need to talk by phone pleas call 475-6566. COCC Indian Program Has New Head According to Dr. George Zahl, Dean of Student Personnel Services at Central Oregon Community College, Linda Brown has been named to the Native American program at COCC. . Ms. Brown will be attending the November 9 education meet ing at Kah-Nee-Ta. In a phone interview, she said she is anxious to meet personally with parents, students, and tribal education leaders. Ms. Brown comes to Central Oregon from five years as coor dinator of Indian Education Re search in Reno, Nevada. Her tribal background is Klamath, Modoc and Paiute. Ms. Brown will be assisting Central Oregon Native Ameri cans with programs, courses and services offered by COCC. For further information, contact the counseling office at 382-6112, ext. 340. United Indians Education Conference The United Indians of All tribes Foundation is holding an Education conference at the Sheraton in Portland at the Lloyd Center November 6,7, & 8. Registration fee is only $10.00 and will cover registration materials as well as the banquet Tuesday evening. Featured speakers include Office of Indian Education per sonnel from Washington, D.C., state education officials and nationally known educators. The conference also features live entertainment at the ban quet, career-education opportu nities fiar, and display fair.
