PAGE authorities have interviewed a non-enrollee from Warm Springs and an individual from Madras in connection with ru stling of cattle belonging to tribal mem bers. Some of thé cattle owned by tribal members has reportedly been spirited off the reservation and allegedly put up for sale at the Madras Stock Yards. Twelve head of cattle were discovered March 29 at the stock yards by the State Brand Inspector, Buck Hodges. No arrests have been made, but an investigation is being conducted by authorities. HOW WARM SPRINGS VOTED In W arm Springs, voters chose B a rtle tt over U ren Leo nard, Bartlett collecting 39 votes while Leonard drew 38 votes. Vic Gregg collected 23 votes to make a total of 90 voters turning out from Warm Springs. THE OVERALL RESULTS Bartlett received a total of 573 votes to Vic Gregg’s 470 and Uren Leonard’s 105. 1148 voters turned out overall. Although the people from Warm Springs passed 509-J’s tax levy, 73 “yes” votes to 27 “no” votes, the tax levy failed to pass overall, 533 “ y e s” votes to 608 “no” . The total budget was for $5 m illion, but only $3,500,000 has to be ra ise d from local taxes. The school board will decide at th eir m eeting on April 10 when the next election will be and how much the levy will be for. Retiring Soon No Fishing Near Hatchery The N atural R esource De partment reminds everyone that all fishing is closed on the portion of the W arm Springs R iver n e a r the W arm Springs National Fish Hatchery. No fish ing is allowed in the a re a th at extends one-half mile upstream and one-half mile downstream from the Fish Hatchery site. Gene G reene, N atural R e source Dept. Director and Tribal Council C hairm an, explained that the purpose of the closure in that area is for the protection of anadrom ous fish due to the concentration of fish near bar rie rs, p a rtic u la rly dam s. Fish are particularly vulnerable near dam s w here they a re being d i verted into sanctuary. This reg ulation will be en forced by both the Natural Re source Department and the Tri bal Police. Signs will be posted in the near future.
