M A R C H 10, 1978 To Those Who Helped, To Those Who Couldn’t Help, To Those Who Want To Help by Eagle Wing “For those of us interested and involved in education it is critical that we understand hu man development and matura tion. Every human constantly carries and presents a complex network of physical, social, emo tional, and intellectual develop mental patterns. Learning oc curs in relation to all of these and there is no logical way to single out any one area to the exclusion of others. It is one of the marvels of human function ing that all of these factors are interrelated and interact in any learning situation. Therefore, whatever our role in the edu cation of young learners, it is crucial that we reach out to every discipline and every sour ce of knowledge possible.’’ With the above quotation, I want to express my heartfelt emotions regarding young teen agers of our community who have been so tragically involved in the taking of a life and the youngsters who lived and died in a hurry without learning about the good things, of the world. The deaths of these young people have been personal to me. I have searched for reasons why kids go wrong-or right; for explanations of such tragedies and the disappointm ents we sometimes encounter in our work with young people. I have been asking many questions since then and getting some answers. Who is really responsible for those misspent lives and young George and Jareen’s untimely deaths? Yes, the bullets took the lives of George and Jareen, but who really killed them? I wonder if others are not really responsible. Is it partly our society which seems to condone so much recklessness and lawlessness among our young people? Are not our courts in part to blame because of their laxity in issuing verdicts and sentencing? What about the churches? Aren’t they partly responsible because of their indecision and lack of compas sion, their failure to meet human need or reluctance to rescue young people?
