(Bandy Rangila photo) Brevettes Host Fundaze Invitational by Roger Stwyer The Eighth Annual Fun- daze Invitational S o f t b a l l Tournament is over, and the Eugene C hic’s showed their fine quality to play by winning the first place trophy. The perpetual trophy must be won three times before a team can take it home. Lake Oswego won it the last two years, but was unable to make it this year. When asked what led his team to victory, Coach Revelle replied, “It was obviously our pitching, we never pitched this good a g a m e.” But in an earlier game against Eugene, the coach for Lebanon said, “ The pitcher for Eugene chokes up in a full count situation.” . The cham pionship gam e, played between Eugene and Medford Taco Bells, was ded icated to Jake Wacker, who was coach of Junction City and passed away last month. Auro- lyn Stw yer, reigning Miss Warm Springs and center field for the Warm Springs Brav- ettes presented a beautiful Pendleton blanket to the wid ow. The first gam e of the championship series was won by Medford, 3-1, in front of a Crowd of about 200 people. A player for Medford remarked, “We won because of our de fense, we held them from scoring, and m ade very few errors.” A spectator w a s slightly mad because Eugene lost the first game. He showed this when he said, “the ump ires were just cheating for Medford.” The umpires were Doyle Whipple of Madras, and Lyle Thomas of Bend. In the final game, Eugene outscored Medford 9-1 to take the championship. The Warm Springs Brav ettes didn’t play too well, but they won their first gam e against McMinneville 9-3. In their games, the Brev ettes lost to Hillsboro, 7-0, and then to Medford 3-1. Coach of the B revettes, Vernon Taner washa said , “ we never got started right away in the first three innings, and we never hit the ball.” It was no shame to lose to Hillsboro though, be cause they were Oregon State Champs last year, and took fourth in the Nation. The Most Valuable Player was Dree McCabe who played for Eugene Chic’s: The Most Valuable Pitcher was Rhonda Revelle who also played for Eugene Chic’s. The Sportsmanship trophy weht to McMinnville. Julie M itchell, Warm Springs Bravettes, was chosen Outstanding Hitter of the tour nament because she had the highest batting average, 583. Bill Walton to Arrive by Roger Stwyer Bill Walton, famed center for the Portland Trailblazers, National Basketball Association champions, will conduct a two- day basketball clinic at the Warm Springs Community Cen ter July 29-30. Richard Trudell, director of the American In dian Law yers Training Pro gram said that Bill Walton may bring another basketball player down to help, who prob ably will be from the Blazers also, because last year, Walton couldn’t handle all the kids by himself. Walton is here in conjuc- tion with the Culture Camp and Camp Ny-Mu-Mah sched uled for July 16-23, and July 25 to August 5 respectively. A camp similar to this was conducted by Walton recently at Oglala Camp in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Thè clinic is supported by the National Football League Charities, Robert Kennedy Me morial, and the American In dian Law yers Training Pro gram.
