Salem, Oregon, Friday, Jefferson High Discloses Top 1957 Students Arlcne Swaiison Leads Qass With 1.38 Average JEFFERSON (Special) - Arlene nwanson has been named valedic torian of the Je(ferson High School senior class. Jerry Marcum will be salutatorian, according to Irv ine Miller, superintendent. Miss Swanson is the daughter of Mrs. John E. Swanson of Corvallis and came to Jefferson High School from Willow River, Minn, in 1955. Her grade average is 1.38. She has i been active in the Girls' Athletic -League, the Pep Club, girls' phy sical education and a membes of the high school annual staff for two years. Marcum is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Marcum, of Jeffer son. His grade average Is Ii46' He is student body president and a letterman in football, baseball and basketball. Active in Future Farm ers of America, Marcum was a member of tie state judging team, was a delegate to the Kansas City convention and winner of a state FFA farmer award. Joint Rotary Session Held MOLALLA (Special) This week's regular Rotary luncheon meeting was attended by 60 men when an inter-city meeting was held here with Silvcrton Rotarians. About ' 25 drove over from the neighboring town of Silverton. There were three Woodbum and one Oregon City members also present. The first inter-city meet ing for Molalla was a marked suc cess. Silverton Rotarians invited Molalla's Club ' to Silverton for some future date to be decided upon later. Rev. Elmer, Jefferson, was guest speaker, showing colored slides and telling of his stay in Egypt on a two-year contract there with American Missions in interdenom inational service to the Americans in the Cairo vicinity. He later was evacuated when fighting broke out in that region. j Also at the meeting were Mo lalla FFA chapter president Roger Schocnborn and treasurer Bob Fricdrich who presented a check for $57.06 to George Guild, Rotary president, as one-fourth of the net taken in at the recent FFA ama teur show, to go to the Molalla Recreation fund. At next week's Rotary meeting, April 16. it will be competitors' day and each member is to bring his competitor to the meeting as a guest. ' ., Fire Auxiliary To Give Dance DALLAS' (Special) The Dallas Volunteer Fire Department auxi liary met this week with Mrs. Ken neth Bailey as the hostess to plan for the dance being held Saturday evening at the armory. The group will gather at the home of Mrs. Paul Palmer Thursday and Friday evenings to complete favors. The program featured a talk by representatives from the Winfield China company. Plans were, made to attend a social evening with the Monmouth Fire Deartment Auxiliary in Mon mouth April 17. Mrs. Palmer, president, was in charee of the evening's meeting. Refreshments were served by the hostess assisted by Mrs. Dave Thompson. The group will meet in May with Mrs. Harold Peterson. ' April Showers was the theme of the decorations which featured pa per umbrellas and arrangements of daffodils on the dining tables, in the newly remodeled VFW hall. Calif. Mrs. Shattuck was initiated into Almira Rebekah lodge Dec. 17, 1929 and served the lodge as noble grand in 1935. Delegates elected to attend grand lodge were Mrs. Calvin Barnhart, Mrs. L. L. Meyer and Mrs. J. F. Spooner, with Mrs. A. H. Peterson selected alternate. Mrs. Calvin Barnhart was recom mended district deputy president. Grand lodge will be in Bend May 21 to 23. George Washington died at the age of 68. matching box spring. 69.88 5.00 Down THE CAPITAL JOURNAL Ijaycee Drive i lln Ambulance Fund Pushed Silverton Group Says Growing Budget Encouraging SILVERTON (Special) - Speak er guests at today's (Friday) reg- u 1 a r noon luncheon, program at Toneys of the Silverton Chamber of Commerce were rep resentatives of the Jaycees to tell of the plans and progress of the Junior Forum s project of secur ing a Silverton City ambulance. Progress in donations and cash is encouraging, the Jaycees reported. The junior ambulance committee chairman is the Jayeee first vice president, Steve' Mead, assisted by the president Hal Roth, and all individuals making up the organi zation'. Chamber of Commerce presi dent is Qucntin Estell, and the sec retary is Walter S. Mallory, who were official hosts to the organi zation members and interested in dividuals. Two service stations have agreed to donate gas, lube service and oil for the first year's run of the ambulance. Other firms and indi viduals are generously interested in the move. Willamette Valley News Silverton Lions Host Zone Meet SILVERTON (Special) The members of Silverton Lions Club with George Christenson president, was host group to all Lions uuds In Marion and Polk Counties in a Zone meeting at the 6:30 dinner program hour at Toneys this week. The meeting was conducted by Zone Chairman. Steam Cushing, of Salem, when each club repre sentative gave a report of the gen eral projects of the educational progress and activities of the Club. The group was honored by the official visit of the Lions District Governor, Claude Hall of Wald- port, who talked on the values of Llonism. Pipe Bids Eyed By Molalla City MOLALLA (Special) Tues day's monthly city council meet ing was taken up mainly with dis cussing bids received for 3 300 feet of eight-inch water pipe. Bids re ceived were from Beal Pipe & Tank, $1.84 a foot; Ammco, $1.82; Consolidated Supply, $1.85; Pacific Water Works, $1.85; H. D. Fowler, $1.77. None of these bids has been been accepted as yet. Business Men's Club will send gifts of flowers to the aged and shut-in mothers of this locality on Mother's Day, the second Sunday of May, according to plans an nounced at the Monday evening meeting of the club. President Bernard Kirsch also will appoint a committee regarding sponsoring a Mother's Day program for all mothers. The Club voted finances to spon sor a high school boy to Beaver Boys state. The new scale would pay the fire chief $4, assistant chief, $3.50, and reg ulars $3 for each fire call answer ed and $2 for practice meetings. Councilmen at the last meetinf also discussed a special sewer bond election, a mosquito control -program, and Improvement of sur roundings of the swimming pool. Councilman Dean Smith pro posed the increase in 'firemen'! pay to stimulate interest in the department.
