W-A symphony orchestra, says Conductor Wil liam Steinberg, laces a great challenge "to preach the gospel of music wherever we can." As leader of the Pittsburgh Symphony steadily winning ac claim as one of the world s great orchestras Steinberg believes 'Skip-Tracer' Outfit Probed WASHINGTON W Rep. Por ter (D-Ore) said Wednesday the Post Office Department's inspec tion service is investigating oper ations of a "skip-tracer" organ ization in Oregon. The congressman did not identi fy the organization. He said the firm is using forms similar to those of the Internal Revenue Bu reau. He said postal officials told him the firm operates out of Washington. D. C. Porter said the form used by the company frequently contains a statement to the effect that a sum is "collectible" in return for the information requested. To some persons, Porter said, the statement is an implied prom ise of money coming to them. "Too many times, the sum specified is tht amount owed by .the individual, and is collectible from them," he warned. ! Their concert last night in this north western Pennsylvania city of 15, 000 marked the final stop in a series unique among musical or ganizations of similar stature. Traveled 80 Miles The symphony entourage of more than 100 persons travelled B0 miles to play the single engagement, before a capacity au dience of 600. Today the orchestra returned to Pittsburgh where weekend concerts will conclude the winter season of 121 perform ances in SI citier scattered among 15 states from Michigan to Flor ida. Is such a strenuous schedule, venturing off the beaten path of large musical units, worth while? Definitely so, Steinberg says. "Even If one concedes that so called 'popular' music is better understood, one finds the Ameri can people very receptive to all kinds of serious music," he told an interviewer. Major orchestras in the U. S. and Europe regularly go on tour. But usually they visit other large cities. Last night's concert in Warren, and five other stops during the season were, on the contrary, big musical events In relatively small communities. Light Company Pays All costs were paid by Manu facturers Light A Heat Co., a nat ural gas firm serving western Pennsylvania area outside Pitts burgh. The utility scheduled the concerts as a public service. Lo cal sponsors kept all proceeds from ticket sales for use in local projects. Steinberg, a native of Cologne, Germany, conducted throughout Europe and Israel before he was persuaded to coma to America by the late Arturo Toscanini. He emphatically approves of this semicommcrcial sponsorship, says it's infinitely superior to the European system In which sim ilar orchestras are maintained by tax funds, By Walt Dlmey ma MAAlTETlR I G o m t nIIv e xUa ETA LEA NIIe X P ElR S S nt eEht enTmp CZlxjl yBg op nB k uH i y MD o n L ENDBC AT0TU CK III a T e PB soy s a lop T p BtJa per ? 3 Hi o U Sf A L E i n ylfu 5. eJIc L o i rIaItIeUsieUhTeilId olullon ( VatUrdar't Puaile DOWN 1. The vote was 15-10 with some members urging that the com mittee meet again next week. Rep. Bailey (D-WVa) said the 1,500 pages of subcommittee hear ings on the bill would not be in printed form until April 30. Bailey, a supporter of the five- year school aid program, is chair man of the subcommittee which approved it. Noting that Congress is due back from its Easter recess April 29, he said Speaker Ray- burn ID-Tex) told him it would be advisable to have the bill ready for floor d e b a te after Easter.
