Salew, Oregon', Thursday, March' 28, 1957 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL Section 1 Page 7 MILITARY A'EJTS 4 Salem Men Take Part in Ship Operation Four Salem Marines were among those landing on the Philip pine Island of Luzon March 25 with the Third Marine Division in 1he largest ship-to-shore operation held in the Far East since World War II. The men were Pfc. William J. Fldler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Franklin, 1640 S. High St.; Cpl. James E. Frlcse, son of Mrs. Mil dred B. Friese, 1325 N. 23rd St., and husband of the former Jean A. Luke, 110 Chase Ave.; Pfc. Melvin D. Van Cleave, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Van Cleave, 4690 Fletcher Rd.; and Pfc. Virgil J. Lucht, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Lucht, 8010 N. River Rd. William C. Hockelf, seaman, USN, son of Capt. Verden H. Hockett, 355 Fawk Ave., Salen was among those men arriving af Boston, Mass., March 20 aboard the support carrier USS Wasp. M. Sgt. Robert L. Price, son of Mrs. Maude L. Price. Lebanon, was graduated recently from the Infantry School's advanced non commissioned officers course at Ft. Benning, Ga. Sp. 3.C. Horace .G Wrlghthousc, son of Mrs. Marie A. Wrighthouse. Falls City, recently took part in a field training exercise of the 6th Infantry regiment in Berlin The Oregon soldier entered the Army in May, 1955, and is a gun- , ner in company L of the regiment. Sp. 3.C. William E. Vlbbard, whose wife resides in Silverton has been presented an Army safe driver award in Ludwigsburg. Germany, where he is with the 24lh transportation battalion. Vlb bard received the award for dnv ing military vehicles 19.000 miles without an accident or trallic vi olation. He entered the Army in December. 1953. Sgt. Jerrold A. Muller, whose wife lives at Rt. 2, Albany, has been graduated from the n o n -commissioned officer's course at the Infantry School at Ft. Ben ning. Ga. Muller is a former Ore gon State College student. Pfc. Dale W. Donaldson, son of Mrs. Maude Donaldson, 4085 Gary St., Salem, is a wireman in the mortar battery of the 16th infan try regiment of the 1st Division at Fort Riley, Kan. Donaldson, whose father, John W. Donaldson, resides at 1180 Highland Ave., at tended the North Salem High School. He entered the Army in March, 1954. Marine LI. Col. Daniel J. Mc Lellan, son of the D. J. McLel lans, HOD Chemeketa St., has been graduated from the two -week engineer officer field grade refresher course at the Engineer School. Fort Belvoir. Va. The colonel, a sraduate of Oregon State College, entered the Marine Corps in 1942. SFC Edward S. Bergeron, whose wife resides at Sweet Home, has been graduated from the advanced non-commissioned oificer s course at the Infantry School, Ft. Ben ning. Ga. Pfc. Mike Ramp of Brooks spent last weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Ramp, Brooks. He is being transferred to t. Lewis, Wash. Pvt. Donald D. Guenther, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey H. (juenmer, 773 Piedmont St.. Salem, was re centlv graduated from the Military Pnfice Trainine Center. Ft. Gordon. Ga. Guenther entered the Armv in October. 19. He attend ed Western Baptist College. Elmer H. Wooldrldge, son of Mrs. G. B. Bietz, 1894 Baxter Rd.. w .nlicied in the six months training program of the Salem Marine Corps Reserve unit, the 3rd 155 mm Gun Battery. He is a junior at the South Salem high school. Lt. Nor Wellman, son-in-law of Mr and Mrs. Harold F. Ridinss. He was released from active dutv January 30 and at the time was transferred to the inactive reserve rolls from which he trans ferred back to the unit. Pvt. Groree R. Fonkhnnser, Jr.. I' S Marine Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs George Robert Funkhouser, Rt 1 Box 21S. Brooks, is taking hi recruit training with the Mrrines at San Diego.
