Ud comes the answer that tho people at Pan American World Airways most want to know: the c.ieapest cost per ton-mile. The mrline thus hnnps. tn ho moilu juiien it gets delivery, starting in jjJcccmDer 1958, on the 48 jets and It-pare parts it has on order. ncxi me specittcations on all ither jets now being produced or llaniied Will take the samo nanar riD through the IRM 7ns Inrf m,i Sif the big machine will come, per fiaps, a valuable guide to future purchases of more jets. 11 tins aaia were worked out by land, it would take one month per jilane, according to John S. Wood- bridge, Pan Am comptroller. With the mechanical brain the job can be done in half an hour. It takes much longer than that to get the program set up and into the machine. But much of the ma terial can be used over and over for different planes and different flight conditions. For each paper jet being tested, technicians prepare 69 punch cards. Of these 45 describe the plane's various attributes. The other 24 cards deal with the route between the two cities in volved, such as distance, depart ure and destination airports' ele vations, runway lengths and tem peratures, wind values, fuel prices and distance and other required data on an alternate airport if needed. These 69 cards for each of the various jets on order Boeing and Douglas are put through the ma chine, at several different alti tudes of flight. Pan Am is thus learning what plane is most economical under what conditions and what routes are too short, or airport runways too skimpy, for any but highly ex pensive ton-mile costs. Students Plan Store Boycott As Tax Protest BLOOMINGTON, Ind. IB-Indiana University students, protest ing a plan to tax their personal property here, were urged by school authorities today "to study the legal angles before carrying out a threatened boycott of Bloom ington merchants. Robert Shaffer, dean of stu dents, suggested the students con fine their protests to "legal steps." Joseph A. Franklin, uni versity vice president and treas urer, said they could appeal to the State Tax Board. "A student demonstration could be interpreted as being immature and irresponsible where other legal steps are - possible," Shaf fer said. County Assessor Frank Borland said last week his deputies will try to assess all student property, including automobiles and per sonal belongings. A student group, calling itself th "All-Campus Anti-Tax Com mittee," circulated a printed ap peal for the boycott. Merchants said they have felt no effects. UEVi TUEffE WAC. For the past six years, the girl's foster mother has been film star Joan Fontaine, and the actress Calls her interracial family "the greatest lesson in my life." i.' Joan discovered little Martita, then 511, living in a mud hut in remote village atop the Andes in Peru while the star was tour ing the country. s i saw Martita sitting on the Wall of this home she was the caretaker's daughter," the actress said at MGM on the set of "Until They Sail." i. J Destined for Each Other 'it was fate we were destined for each other," Miss Fontaine aid. "I thought, 'She's Mine.' It was a spur of the moment im pulse. She had lots of brothers nd sisters so her parents wanted me to take her because they said, 'You can give her more advan tages, and we feel this girl is Worthy of opportunities.' " After arrangements were made with the parents and American consul, Joan brought Martita home and became her legal guardian. .." "It was difficult at first," the actress admitted. "Everyone was so beastly. They accused me of doing it for publicity. They said, 'You've adopted a colored girl.' Enthralled with Child "But one by one they became as enthralled with her as I was. Soon she was playing with other little girls and within six months the situation was adjusted. She wore braces on her legs for months because they were bowed from carrying her younger broth er on her back. ' The part Inca, part Spanish Martita never had seen ice cream or airplanes before, let alone a beautiful actress such as .loan Fontaine. The child, now 11. goes to a private Catholic school with Joan's own child, Deborah, 8. The actress says the girls arc happy together.
