Page '4 Section 2 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL . Salem, Oregon, Monday, March 18, 1957 BUSINESS MIRROR Steel, Copper Cutbacks Show New Trend in Business Scene By SAM DAWSON NKW YORK Ml Cutbacks in tlrcl and copper production point up today the changing business scene: consumer spending trends, businc caution over inventories, (ruitinn ol the hie expansion drive Carted by the Korean war. World shortages in copper and light supply in steel sent both in diiEtries in quest of udded produc tion capacity. Prices climbed and output climbed. Still more capacity will be added this year and next. La bor peace in copper for more than a year and in steel since Inst summer helped boost output and lick shortages, Kasily Availahle By now the world can produce more copper than is currently wanted. For the moment anyway, the United States can turn out more of some kinds of" steel than the customers want to stock. The cutbacks so far aren't large, and may even profit the companies. Steel production, after setting historic records in the first two months of this year, is now re treating toward 00 per cent of rat ed capacity. But steelnien point out that the most profitable out put rate lies somewhere in that neighborhood. To go above that- steel com- fianics usually have to use old and ess efficient eriuipmcnl: they have to delay ordinary shutdowns lor needed mninlennnce: and therefore, in setting records they may be doing so with some ex pensively turned out steel. After Every Meal Chew refreshing, delicious Wrigley's Spearmint Gum. Helps keep teeth, clean aids digestion. Copper production has been pared down by some firms in two steps, starting last November. But Phelps Dodge, for example, in its latest cutback which will start at the end of this week will be working its mines 22 days out of each 21) and that's still more than a five day week. Anv savings in overtime pay could make up for some of the decrease in sales and paring of prices that brought about the production cuts. That is the production side of the picture, which the steel and copper companies can pretty much determine for themselves. Up to Customers The sales side depends on their customers, to a large degree man' ufacturers making goods for the consuming public. And there have been some changes here. While shortages were feared and prices firm or rising, purchasing agents had incentives to build up inven tories if they could. When supply caught up and prices, In some instances, turned soft, the incen tive was to stop building up in ventories and even to live off of present ones where feasible. So demand slipped, and fairly speedily. Consumer buying habits played a major - role in this. ' Demand for autos and many household appliances hasn't been as frenzied this year as in I !55. Whether a lot of people will get the urge to buy new cars, to up date their home equipment, or to build new houses is the big question now for these consumer goods Industries. New Portland Hotel to Go Up PORTLAND UH - Lloyd Corp. officials say they hope to begin by mid-summer construction of an eight-story, six-million-dollar high way inn type hotel here.
