House passage of the bill yes terday sent it to the Senate, where action is expected before April 1. On that date, corporation and excise (sales) tax rates are sched uled to drop automatically. This would cut Treasury revenues about three billion dollars and en danger prospects for a budget surplus. The bill passed by the House on voice vote would extend until April l, 11)58, the present S2 per cent levy on corporation profits, u also would continue for the same span the present excise rates on liquor, cigarettes, pas senger automobiles and auto parts ana accessories. Without the new legislation, the corporation lax rate would fall to 47 per cent and excise levels would drop to those in effect be fore the Korean War. Before voting, the House heard nep. That's tho purposo of Bill Kay den, who is producing the TV Academy Awards show over NBC. He's got his work cut out for him. Critics have long blasted the awards show as being an endless parade of dull speeches. How can Kayden get entertain ment into the show when 25 .Em mies are (o he presented? "For one thing, we're having three singers present awards Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole and Julie London," the producer ex plained. "Each will sing a song before making the presentation. "Also, we will have Phil Silvers, Ernie Kovacs and Jimmy Durante among the presenters and they will do some standup comedy. Plus which the whole show is be ing written in a light vein, with the accent on entertainment." Kayden, who has handled the Rose Parade, Oscar awards, Roy Rogers Rodeo and other special shows for the network, said that "99 per cent of the nominees will be present." Only those who are out of the country or working at telecast time will be missing, he remarked. Fortunately, none 'of the nom inees are on opposing shows at the time of the NBC telecast, 'Twould be embarrassing. These are the ninth annual awards, the third national tele cast, and the first in color. The unwieldy banquet of previous years has been abandoned for presentation in an NBC studio in Burbank.
