0 n Page & Section 2 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL Boeing Will Design 'Chemical Bomber' SEATTLE W A Boeing Air plane Co. ' spokesman said Tues day Boeing Has Been awarriea a $3,250,000 contract for continuing design studies of an "advanced type bombardment aircraft beyond the BSJ." The award came from head quarters of the Air Material Com mand, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, 0., the spokesman said. Hf added that the company could not give any further details. The Seattle Times said the Air Force contract is for continued studies of the proposed WS1I0A chemically-powered supersonic bomber. Previous reports. The Times said, have indicated the chemical bomber design will call for a plane operating at 75,000 fret altitude at a top speed of three or four times the speed of sound. This would be somewhere near or beyond 2,000 miles an hour. The Times also said the WS110A is now considered as the eventual plane to replace the B52 Jet inter continental bomber and that both Boeing and North American Avia tion, Inc., have been seeking con tracts for studies for such a plane. A chemical plane, The Times said, would use a petroleum-base fuel with chemical additives to yield greater heat energy and pro- viae greater speed and range, Actors Let Their Hair Down at Annual Writers' Guild Dinner By ALINE MOSBY United Press Hollywood Writer HOLLYWOOD (UP)-Thc best show of the season in Hollywood, starring Burt Lancaster as a song and-dance man, unfortunately was one the public never got to see. Of all movieland's award events, the annual Writers' Guild Dinner each year turns out to be the top entertainment better than some seen in theaters and on TV sets. This banquet draws more stars and top executives than the Acad emy Awards. They realize writers. still are the mainstay of enter tainment and they know t h e screen and TV scribes will outdo themselves to write a top show to be played by actors happy to let tneir nair down, Gags Designed for Trade But the shindig Is only for the trade. This year NBC wanted to , televise the parly but the guild ruled most of the gags ere "fam ily jokes" the public wouldn't understand, and to change the show would take the fun away from moviotowners. Thus TV viewers missed seeing Joan Collins, Lancaster and John Lund do a musical satire of "Baby Doll" and "My Fair Lady" combincd. Many of tho gags at the ban quet poked fun at the troubles of RKO studio under the ownership of tiro magnate Tom O'Ncil and airplane magnate Howard Hughes. Actor Fred Clark portrayed the head of a plumbing company who Freshens! .Your, Mouth Sweetens Your Breath bought a studio "with one objec tive in mind to take a capital loss. "I don't know anything about the movie business that s why I was picked for this job," growled Clark. "But I've run more cor porations into the ground than anybody." Groucho Marx was another hit on the writers show with a hilar ious monologue about how writers' high salaries are "bankrupting" the movies. He read the salary given to the writer of The Ten Commandments": "Moses $150,000, payments spread over a period of 2,000 years." Besides the guild's regular se rious awards, satirical awards were handed out. Jaync Mans field portrayed an extra honored lor the best scream of the year Another award was given to the producer or the best pre 48 mo tion picture shown on the late, late (television) show." Cook to Serve 3-Year Term F or Making $1 PORTLAND (in - Kdward L. Martin, a 63-year-old cook from Baker, Monday was sentenced to three yoars in a federal prison for printing an imitation $1 bill. Both he i and another Baker cook, D. A. Langford, 44, earlier pleaded guilty to another charge of conspiring to violate the fed eral counterfeiting act. Langford was placed on probation for two years. Martin testified he mane the bils to be used in a scheme to convince investors that crudely made hills could bo turned into excellent imitations by putting mem in a cnemical solution. Ho told the court ho never in tended to pass any of-tho counter feit bills, planning only to find investors" for his process. Lane- ford said he did not help make the bills. Tranquilizer 'Hurts Brain' HONOLULU UPl-A research er said today one of the most wide ly used tranquilizing drugs appears to impair the- functions of the brain. , In a copyrighted article appear ing in the Honolulu Advertiser, Dr. Stanley D. Porteus was quoted as saying that use of the drug clor promazine may cause a person to lose his capacity to plan, as well as his initiative, his .creativeness and his drive. Porteus is professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Hawaii. He is widoly known as an Australian author and psychologist who in 1955 was named one of the 14 most important contribu tors" to clinical psychology by the American Psychological Associa tion. Porteus carried out his tests with clorpromazine at the Terri torial Mental Hospital, the Adver tiser said. The drug is widely sold on doc tors' prescriptions to case tensions. Used with another drug called re serpine, it has helped mental in stitutions treat disturbed patients. I ! , Ctl tome today. By Walt Dimey ' III I m a. ...', WISHING WELL R.ftit.r.H U.
