(UP) A "Ghost hotel" that's been Las Vegas' glamorous white elephant at last is coming to life as the gambling town's most supcrcolos sal spa. A year ago Las Vegas had rolled snake eyes and the town sang business blues while hotels opened, closed and changed hands giddily. Today the community appears to be more prosperous. The Royal Nevada and Dunes hotels, once shuttered, are open again. The air port reports it's handled 10,000 more visitors so far this year than it did the first two months of 1(150. Now another new hotel, the $15 million Tropicana, finished but silling empty for a year, will open its doors to take advantage of the better business. Most Klogunt Visitors who've toured the Trop icana rave that it s the most ele gant in the country and the most costly of this resort area. One booster claims it makes Miami's famous Fontainbleu "look like last year's tract house." Ground was broken on the Trop icana in April of 1055. But author ities objected to one o( the owners and turned down the hotel's appli cation (or a gambling license. New owners have taken over, and the Tropicana is set to open April 3 with Eddie Fisher singing in Las Vegas (or the first time. Touring the "ghost hotel" is eerie, even though the place beginning to liven up with hearsing chorus girls. The 300 rooms feature tasteful regency modern decor marble coffee tables,; grccian statues, antique- looking chests, crystal chandeliers Catholics Call Off Their Bus Service Fight AUGUSTA, Maine (fl The heat is off, temporarily at least, in Augusta's dispute over proposed use of public school buses by pa rochial students. Catholic parents voted 283-121 yesterday against going through wilh their threat to send 600-odd children into the already crowded public schools if bus transporta tion isn't provided by the cily to day. They accepted Catholic Mnvor H. Lloyd Carey's advice to wail for a court test. Lawyers for both factions will confer on getting the test to Maine's Supreme Court. Last Wednesday the City Coun cil mnde a token appropriation of $100 to provide bus service to the city's two parochial schools simply as a foundation for the legal challenge. Claude Bourget, city solicitor and a Catholic, told a parents meeting tney would have absol utely nothing to gain" legally by enrolling their children in the public schools before the test case Is decided. The supper duo where New York Monte Proser will present shows has glass walls and nine stages eluding one that nearly circles the room a la Cinerama. The hotel also features a 40-foot hil'h fountain in front, a 10-foot waterfall, roof gradens and scalloped swimming pool with mu sic piped underwater. Shocked Gamblers Veteran gamblers are shocked, but tho Tropicana owners insist gambling will be secondary. Thus the hotel will violate all Las Vegas rules for parting the customer with his money. The guest usually must not be provided with an dis tractions that might keep him from (he crap table no windows or clocks so he can t sec what time of day it is, no TV sets, I templing restaurants or sports.
