MEET IN HOMES First Congregational Launches Lenten Program for 70 Families The First Congregational church launched this week into a Lenten program for the strengthening of the spiritual life of the congrega tion. ' Heading the program is Gerald Smith, chairman of the board of deacons. More than 70 church families are directly involved in the leadership of a series of Len ten meetings, which will meet in members' homes in 16 neighbor hoods of the parish. The main part of the program will be the study and discussion of the book, "Strengthening the Spiritual Life," by Nels F. S. Ferre. Each meeting will also in FOURTH TOUR OF U. S. Evangelistic Service Series Set At 1st Church of the Nazarene The Rev. Robert Emsley will hold a series of evangelistic serv ices at the First Church of the Nazarene, Center at 13th, begin ning Wednesday, at 7:30 p.m. The services will continue nightly at 7:30 tnrougn March 24, except Sat urday. Mr. Emsley Is now making his fourth tour of the United States. A graduate of Cliff college. Shef field, England, his messages em phasize the Wesleyan truths of Bible holiness. Mr. Emsley's last pastorate was one of nine years' duration at the Gildersome Church of th Nazarene. Leeds, England. He has preached in churches across the United States, Canada, England, Scotland and Ireland. Thornton Set To Speak for Presbyterians Men of the First Presbyterian church will hold their March meet ing at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, with Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton as guest speaker. He will discuss "Law Enforcement and the Public Interest." Dinner will be served at 6:30. followed by a fellowship sing at the tables and musical selections by the Mariners' Trio, consisting of Mrs. Francis Allen, Mrs. Rob ert Gahlsdorf, Mrs. F. R. Schwarz and Mrs. Robert Howclls, accom panist. The entire program is being directed by the laymen or the church. An integral part of the program is the series of Lenten sermons by Dr. Keiser, beginning this Sun day. They center on the great un derlying concepts, forming the foundation of the Christian faith. On Wednesday the Men's club will meet for dinner at 6:30 p.m. to hear Dr. Dean Brooks, super intendent ot the Oregon State hos pital speak on "The Role of the Christian for Mental Health." The men of Knight Memorial Congre gational church will be guests at this meeting. Reservations should be made at the church office. The Rev. Color Slides Set For Camera Club Color slides and a lecture on the scenic wonders and geology of the Wallowa mountains in northeast Oregon will be presented at the meeting of the Salem Camera club which is to be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the First Methodist church. "Little Switzerland of America." is the subject of the presentation which will be made by Thomas Stacer. He has spent much time in the Wallowas and the pictures reflect his interest in the geology and scenery of the region. Phone: EM 3-9139 Ptrhct hibuli" Jason Lee Set For 2 Series Of Meditations They Will Be the High Spot of the Lenten Season There The Lenten season at Jason Lee Memorial Methodist church will be highlighted by two series of medi tations. One by the pastor, Rev. Ernest P. Gouldcr, will be present ed during the Sunday morning worship services and the other, scheduled for the Sunday evening firesides, will be directed by Dr. Harvey Zeigler and Dr. Clifford Hanson, both of Willamette univer sity. Rev. Goulder's series of sermons will be based on the general theme, "The Great Affirmations of the Church." "Personalities Close to Jesus," will constitute the theme for the firesides. Dr. Ziegler is Willamette's new chaplain. He came to the university from the University of Hawaii. Dr. Hanson is instructor in philosophy and religion. WS Baptist Slates Cook James Cook, son of missionar ies in India, will be the speaker at the West Salem Baptist church, Sunday morning. Cook is planning on a missionary ministry in India, where he will assist his father in the training of native Christians. At the evening session, Dr. Myron Cedarholm will be the in spirational speaker. Mr. Cedar holm is the general director of the Conservative Baptist association of America. The church will have special missionary services each evening at 7:30, Monday through Friday, with the following missionaries: Monday, Bryon King; Tuesday, George Friesen; Wednesday, Dr. Vincent Brushwyler; Thursday, David Jones; Friday, Ralph John son. Mayor Sets 'Prayer Day Here Friday Mayor Robert F. White Thurs day issued a proclamation setting aside Friday, May 8, for Salem to participate in the World Day of Prayer, "The troubled peoples In less fortunate nations than ours, and Indeed even in our own beloved country, need divine guidance as never before, especially as this is stimulate! through prayerful com munion," says the proclamation. 7 Cascade College Students to Visit Seven students from Cascade college, Portland, will appear at two services Sunday at the Fruit land Evangelical United Brethren church. They will take complete charge of the Youth Fellowship service at 6:30 and conduct a panel discussion considering Ihe problems of Christian young people in high school and other social contacts. At 7:30 they will take part in the evening service by leading the singing and bringing special music. The pastor. Rev. Louise Nichols of New York, field secretary for the Wom en's Society of Christian service of the Methodist church will be in Salem Monday and Thursday of next week. Miss Nichols will be a guest of the Salem District Wesleyan Serv ice guild at a 6:30 dinner Monday night at the First Methodist church. Reservations must be made. At 8 o'clock In the church sanc tuary, Miss Nichols will give an inspirational address to the gen eral public. Breakey to Speak For Fellowship Sunday Morning Donald Breakey, assistant pro fessor of biology at Willamette uni versity, will speak to the Unitarian Fellowship this Sunday morning at 10:30 at the YWCA. He will dis cuss "The Life of Charles Darwin in Relation to His Accomplish ments." Bom in Snohomish, Wash., Prof. Breakey received his B.S. degree in biology at Willamette and his M.S.
